I support both tariff plans (26%) – "Trump is a smart guy and nothing he says or does can be taken at face value. It is likely to be a more complex undertaking than it appears with tariffs being a bargaining tool as well as a countermeasure to eliminate harm to the country from trade, immigration and illegal drug trafficking. You can speak softly if you wish but without the 'big stick' nothing is likely to be accomplished... the big stick in this case are tariffs."
I support tariffs on BRICS nations, but not Canada/Mexico/China (12%) – "Canada and Mexico are our closest neighbors and should be treated with a little more respect. We need to work closely with Mexico to limit illegal immigration and the cartels production of illegal drugs. Canada, on the other hand, is a wonderful neighbor we should alienate but work with to continue to maintain a a superior North America alliance."
I support tariffs on Canada/Mexico/China, but not BRICS nations (9%) – "I feel like we should be more occupied with matters close to home, like illegal immigration and drug smuggling into America which Trump is trying to address with those tariffs."
I don’t support either tariff plan (43%) – "The extra tax will only be passed on to the consumers. The countries don't pay them, the US businesses do, and they'll pass them along to the consumer. It just drives up prices - on everything."
"We've seen Trump use this tactic before. The likelihood of him actually enacting tariffs, particularly on Mexico and Canada, is extremely low, as doing so would significantly harm the U.S. economy. Key sectors such as produce, oil and gas, machinery, and building materials would face substantial disruptions. Tariffs, in this context, are primarily a bargaining tool—used to pressure other countries into agreeing to his demands through the threat of economic repercussions."
Other (10%) – "I think tariffs are being weaponized and used as threats to an outcome no one actually wants. IF tariffs are designed to bring jobs to the US, then create a scaled approach to allow companies to make the transition. The current approach will jack up prices in the short term and companies will pass that cost to the consumer. We've seen that movie a hundred times. IF the tariffs are designed to close borders and stop the drug flow/problems then find a tactic that, if you have to follow through, won't hit the general consumers' pocket so abruptly. This is a complex problem that requires a complex, thoughtful approach."
