Which of the following best describes your personal opinion towards the shooting of Brian Thompson and the suspect’s reported motive?

Strongly support the suspect and his reported motive (18%) – "It's a wake up call for our government to investigate our healthcare industry. If all healthcare companies were doing things in favor of their members, showing compassion, Luigi would have never shot the CEO. This tells us Americans that the healthcare industry is ripping us off & putting the money in their pockets. We have freedom of speech, let us make sure this does not go down quietly."

  • "We had to fight the insurance company for almost a year for them to cover an overnight stay in the hospital after my mom had her mastectomy. The Affordable Care Act changed that and got rid of the practice of “drive by mastectomies”. My mom’s old health insurer (the only one who would insure her was out of Kentucky and didn’t have to follow Illinois regulations (when she lives). We need the federal government to intervene and protect the public. It can’t be pushed back to the states as much of this abuse occurs across state boundaries."

Somewhat support the suspect and his reported motive (20%) – "Although I DO NOT condone violence, I can see how a person who has some mental instability could be driven to 'do justice' if in their eyes, they felt very strongly that they had been wronged. Chronic pain is nothing to joke about. It can drive a person crazy. That being said, the victim should not be held responsible (and certainly not harmed) for the actions of his company.Assuming the shooter was mentally unstable, I believe the shooter should be prosecuted and sentenced to a mental health facility as opposed to prison."

  • "I do not condone violence and I think he should be prosecuted for murder. However, I do sympathize with him and his frustration with the medical insurance monopolies. It has become second nature in America that your first submittal will be rejected and you have to continue to submit and beg them to do what they are supposed to do. It's a shame. Hopefully something good will come out of this tragic situation."

Neutral to the whole situation (12%) – "I don't think violence is the answer, but something has to be done about the way health insurance is done in this country because it's ridiculously expensive with so little benefit for us. I didn't know what category was "sympathetic to the motive but against the action" so I picked neutral."

  • "While I feel for the situation the Insurance Agency has placed the shooter in, and can understand the desire for justice for a VERY corrupt system. I at the same time cannot condone the killing of another person- even if they are a root cause of the health care crisis that effect the US. Two wrongs do not make it right, but the legislation being sponsored by both parties to maybe create positive change in this terrible situation"

Somewhat oppose the suspect and his reported motive (10%) – "While I understand the frustration & how his grievance against the healthcare system could resonate with the general public, I also think that violence is not the way to get things done. Because there needs to be healthcare reform in this country, this tragic event is getting its fair share of attention & it’s scary to think that this may be the thing that will lead to the changes needed."

Strongly oppose the suspect and his reported motive (40%) – "I completely agree that our health system is messed up and that the higher ups in the industry make make far more money then deserved, however, I cannot condone killing someone to make a point or to highlight an issue. Human life is precious. I hope the health care industry listens to the frustrations and does something about it -- however, I doubt they will since then their bonuses would be reduced. Big Pharma, Health Care -- full of greedy people that are not doing the best for the general public."

  • "Vigilantism has no place in a society that relies on rules and consequences to achieve order. But I also believe that healthcare is a right and that no healthcare-related organization should be able to make a profit from, or restrict access to, services, professionals, and organizations that provide that care. Those are two separate ideas and society’s responses to them should be kept separate."

"We cannot approve of retribution in the form of murder under any circumstances. This country was founded on the principles of allowing our justice system to upload law and order. It’s crazy to me to see people actually supporting this individual. The real problem lies with our elected officials on both sides to allow a substandard health system while they benefit from an excellent healthcare program. Geez! This is where we need to “open our eyes”.

  • "Violence, no matter the grievances behind it, is a tragic failure of dialogue, compassion, and justice. While the frustrations surrounding the inequities and injustices within the healthcare system are undeniably valid, taking a life is an irrevocable act that only deepens divisions and pain. True reform comes through perseverance, collective action, and the courage to seek solutions that honor the dignity and humanity of all involved. We must channel our outrage into constructive change, not destructive acts."
