Do you support New York City’s new congestion pricing plan?

👍 Yes (36%) – "Driving in a crowded city that has ample public transportation is wasteful and should not be as easy as it has been in the past. London has successfully used congestion pricing for many years, and it’s time we get on board before we get into an even worse situation because nobody wants to make a change."

  • "Textbook economics says to tax externalities—actions that have negative impacts on others. Congestion delays ambulances, makes people late for work, and creates air pollution. Congestion pricing is not a new cost, it’s forcing drivers to internalize the costs they were already imposing on others.

"Problems are only solved if something changes. Unfortunately, but realistically changes that “hurt” our finances usually are the most effective. This painful change could generate a lot of positive results; money for infrastructure changes, people reducing unnecessary driving…if this is the best solution offered then, it makes sense to at least try it and see what people can learn from the experiment."

👎 No (43%) – "Pricing plan is not the solution. Construct large parking lots around the perimeter of that area and provide shuttle bus transportation from those parking lots into the area. In other words, shut those areas down to POVs, leaving it open only to emergency response and delivery vehicles and the shuttle buses."

  • "The MTA is fiscally irresponsible and to continue to give them infinitely more money without KPI accountability, leaves the burden on the backs of working class New Yorkers who endure sub standard services. The train/subway infrastructure is the most expensive to use while being the most antiquated. The MTA should be disbanded and privatized with state oversight."

"It has the propensity to hurt commuters as well as tourists and punishes people for driving and hurt poor families. The New York transit system is occupied by vagrants and the criminal elements."

  • "Some people have to go there to work. It just adds one more expense to living and working beer an already expensive city. Also, why do people making under $50k have to pay anything at all? That's ridiculous!"

🤷 Unsure/other (21%) – "I'm unsure if this policy will effectively address what it has proposed to do, but shifting travels methods towards more mass transit can only be good for infrastructure and environmental concerns."

  • "While $9 seems high (and $15 extraordinarily so!), and of course we never like paying more money than we have had to in the past, it seems to me that if this can function similarly to tolls on interstates that it can have a net benefit. I also don't live anywhere near NYC so I don't understand the nuance of the situation. But my main concern is that $9 seems really high for people who may have to enter that district on a regular basis for work/life. I feel like I'm missing information on what really informed that price point and I'd be interested to see the research and data points that went into that decision."
