👍 Positively (15%) – "We have to prevent China from further infiltrating our country through technology. This includes malware that has already been planted in critical infrastructure such as water and power systems and algorithms like til tok’s that allow china to influence the information that people see. Losing a few silly videos (that can still be posted on Instagram, YouTube and other apps) is a small price to pay. Free speech will not be infringed. Preventing China from manipulating the information flow will actually protect it."
👎 Negatively (14%) – "Tik Tok is a form of self expression and creativity for me. i get to show my personality, style, and humor to others and see other people’s. i believe TikTok is the least toxic social media outlet, and its a safe space for many creators. I also believe it is unfair that creators who have worked hard to build a platform, and who income and other job opportunities come from TikTok are going to lose their jobs."
↔️ No real impact (63%) – "Having enough digital distractions in my life I’ve actively chosen not to engage with TikTok. Personally I’m in favor of the ban simply for the reason that we are living in an era of extreme distraction and social media, while it offers a few benefits, has significant consequences on our society (stats on anxiety and depression and the link to our smartphone lives paint this picture with crystal clarity). I’d like to see even more government regulation and accountability towards social media companies— they pour excessive amounts of money into capturing our attention, without more extreme support we simply cannot help ourselves, the issue is far too large and pervasive."
"Yes it will be disappointing but me personally it will not affect me greatly. I am not an influencer or someone who uses TikTok for straight income, but it still does not make it right people who live off of TikTok their income will be affected greatly. Though I will not be affected others will and I do not support the ban."
"I have the app downloaded but I don't use it much. Occasionally someone will send me a video or I'll go to look up some sort of viral new thing that everyone is talking about, but none of those add to my life in a meaningful way. In general I find the app difficult to use in the way I want to use it (which is why I'm not on there more) and I wouldn't miss it if it were gone."
🤷 Unsure/other (8%) – "I’ve personally learned a lot of helpful things from the app such as life skills, self care, and miscellaneous facts. For me it’s a platform to build communities and empower individuals. I wouldn’t be distraught if it were to be banned but it would feel like a loss to me."
