Do you agree with the Trump admin’s recent moves to address what it sees as longstanding culture problems on US college campuses?

👍 Yes (41%) – "Universities have been long-standing epicenters for leftist ideologies instead of providing a place where students can learn multiple perspectives, engage in meaningful dialogue, and make their own decisions about how they interact with the world around them. Not to mention the literal safety issues that come with letting transgender collegians share locker rooms. What I appreciate is the government isn't threatening to shut any universities down, they're setting a boundary and holding it. Some people not liking that boundary doesn't mean the boundary is unfair or shouldn't be there."

  • "Although not Jewish, I have a lot of respect and admiration for that people and their religion. Their entire history has been a long story of persecution and suffering (enslavement, banishment, torment by the Romans, millions killed in the Holocaust, etc.). I find it infuriating that America, which became a refuge for Jewish refugees fleeing Europe during WII, has now become home to pro-Palestine, antisemitic behaviors. College students have the right to express their beliefs. They DO NOT have the right to terrorize Jewish students purely based on their religion/ethnicity/homeland. It’s sickening to see so much hatred directed towards a group of people that deserves our protection and friendship. I’m proud to see Trump using his leverage against these schools to force them to address these horrible behaviors."

"I approve of the ending of DEI as those programs were needed before but are less of a necessity nowadays. However I am unsure of how I feel on the transgender issue as I feel they should be allowed to play sports, just have to have a set amount of time to be on estrogen supplements to be more fair."

  • "While I definitely have mixed feelings over the way federal funding can be used to pressure institutions, I still think it's perfectly legal and reasonable to say that if the federal government is giving away millions of dollars, they should have a say in certain requirements that need to be met in order to receive the funding. And looking at the list of demands being made of Columbia, even though a few of them make me nervous, I don't fully disagree with any of them."

👎 No (49%) – "Because while it’s not perfect, many weren’t taking actions on antisemitism but just advocating for Palestinian lives. Protesting against the Jewish government also isn’t antisemitic because they aren’t the only semitic people and the protesters weren’t doing it for religious purposes."

  • "To be clear, I disagree that the things the administration sees as "culture problems" are in fact problems. Universities are meant to be welcoming, open environments, and are at the forefront of positive change in increasing equity and acceptance of all. Setting that aside, using educational funding as a way to bludgeon schools into conforming to far right ideas is appalling and unfair to all of the students at those schools. It's antithetical to the very idea of universities as a place where great minds have the freedom to pursue knowledge and fact-based science without reactionary political influence and censorship."

"Trump Administration is doing the exact thing that they criticized Biden administration for doing. The problem in general is that Biden and Trump administrations are on opposite ends of the spectrum and universities and everyone else is caught in the middle."

  • "The president should not be able to dictate what happens at a university. This is not to say that universities and colleges shouldn't have their methods and operation challenged; however, that challenge should not be dictated by a president alone."

"I don't disagree that there are major issues on our colleges; in theory, I agree with all the required fixes to address them. What I do NOT agree with, and what's so dangerous, is the government's strongarming of universities to suit the current administration's requirements. Has it happened before, even in the US? Yep. Is it a sign of a healthy republic? Never. Can it lead to dangerous control of centers of learning by whatever government is in power? Sure can."

🤷 Unsure/other (10%) – "I want to see positive changes for higher education and diverse student bodies where all are welcome to learn. I don’t fully trust this administration to do that, especially with how they’re going about it. They’re dismantling this education system and forcing schools to abide by their rules, even if those are not the best for the student body. They are actively making it harder for equal education for all regardless of socioeconomic class so it’s hard for me to feel confident they’re doing right by the universities. It feels like just another tactic meant to control the population and push their agenda. Is it all bad? Maybe maybe not. It feels off to a bit of a heavy handed start though"
