Yes (27%) – "I think the decision to seek the death penalty is well within reasonable demands from the prosecutor, and that the process of law in the court will determine whether or not he is actually deserving of it."
"This was an act of terrorism, the victim was specifically targeted as a socio political message, with forethought (printed and assembled a firearm) and malice, there was no connection to the victim, not personally or through the insurance issues."
No (56%) – "I feel like the death penalty should be held back for the most egregious offenders. Crimes against children, or intellectually challenged individuals, mass casualty events. I feel like anyone who murders someone should be held accountable, but there are plenty of individuals who murder multiple people or commit other heinous crimes and who get only a handful of years."
"The reason for my voting is because first of all I have a 50/50 support for the death penalty but believe it is only best for when the person it is to has completely deserved it. In the case of Luigi Mangione, I feel that the only reason the federal death penalty is wanted to be put on him is because the person whom he murdered was a CEO of UnitedHealthCare who is very important. It sounds bad when put like that but my main opinion for the death penalty is not when the murder is just one person but if the crime determines the individual as someone who is highly sought after and even has a life-long sentence. For Mangione, he should have a sentence for the majority of his life to contemplate his decision."
"I believe that the death penalty is too harsh a punishment, and that it really doesn’t serve any justice. It’s also very unfair that Luigi receives the death penalty when others have done much worse and do not face near the consequences as Luigi would."
I don’t feel strongly either way (11%) – "i voted this way because i am not educated enough to know what actions deserve death penalty as punishment. i also don’t think that people should get to receive death penalty as a way out of thinking about and facing the consequences of their actions. bad actions deserve bad punishments not exits."
Unsure/other (6%) – "I'm at odds with this argument because it is impossible to measure the value of human life. On one hand, I don't believe it is right for us to decide who gets to live because I think the right to life is something that should never be meddled with. On the other hand, that right is something that Luigi Mangione took away from someone else. No matter how much we dislike someone, it does not justify us depriving them of that right to life. However, if we are going to judge who lives and dies, then Mangione should not be exempt from that, as he should be treated as equal as anyone else. Therefore, I'm undecided on this matter."
