"US small businesses will not be able to handle prolonged tarriff hikes. US consumers will not be able to handle prolonged tarriff hikes either. I get that he wants to push companies to bring manufacturing back to the US, but its just not feasable. Even if we had a pool of skilled workers willing to do manufacturing, and US consumers were willing to pay the wages those workers would demand, materials for manufacturing will still need to be sourced from outside the US. They make it sound like a switch just needs to be flipped or a door needs to be unlocked to bring these jobs back, but there is way more to it."
"It’s not even thought out well. Like everything Trump does. It’s basically a tax on small businesses- like mine. I import tea from Japan and we now have to pay a34% tax just to import. See not all products can be grown in the U.S. take coffee and tea for example. 99% of all tea and coffee is imported into the U.S. Tea and coffee are a vital staple for millions and millions of Americans. Now prices will go up dramatically. It’s so short sided on the part of Trump. That’s not to mention how the world views us an untrustworthy trading partner now. It’s literally like Trump wants the destroy Americans small businesses once and for all."
"I think the tariffs are perfectly justified. Most of them are response tariffs, but Trump is also placing these tariffs as a way to put American products back in the hands of the people. We should be using our domestic products more than international products. And, if these countries drop their tariffs or negotiate with the Trump administration, the tariffs would be lowered or dropped altogether."
"Overall, the tariffs are having the intended effect. We are seen as a weak country when it comes to trade and 50+ countries are willing to work with us. The ones that aren't will continue to pay higher prices to import goods into our country. If those price hikes are passed on to consumers, then the market will bear what the market bears - people won't continue to pay higher prices for everything, which is ok. As a reminder, this doesn't apply to American-made products. We'll start to see the prices even out, or maybe American-made prices go lower than imported, and that is an overall good thing for the US citizens. We'd potentially see new jobs, the US being responsible for its own innovation, etc. in the long run, although I don't think these tariffs will last."
"The US has gone through these types of economic adjustments numerous times in its history. The politicians have always spread fear among the voters and special interest groups to try to prevent necessary change that will upset their comfortable complacency to keep things how they are so as to continue their in place and well established mechanisms of control and influence. The US has always benefited in the long run from the necessary change. What makes this most controversial at this time is the status of the country’s extreme political divide and outside monetary and media influence and paid protest. With the attitude of immediate gratification rampant in the US, this only makes it most difficult to wait for the benefits of the measures for change to be implemented and take place."
