In general, do you support stronger or weaker antitrust enforcement against Big Tech?

Stronger (66%) – "If I disagree with a company's policies, I would like to be able to stop using and/or purchasing that company's products. With Big Tech I've found that really hard to do because there are so few alternatives. Companies like Google and Meta have their advantages in convenience and consistency - just as Ma Bell did back in the day - but monopolies never favor consumers and can in fact harm them."

  • "Anticompetitive practices from these monopolies restrict the American freedom to start competing technology companies. If Apple or Google simply offered a superior product, it would be a fairly earned monopoly, but practices like establishing policies thst restrict compatibility or buying out potential competition allows a company's product quality to worsen without being replaced by a competitor."

"Any product where unilateral arbitrary suppression of one discourse effectively eliminates that discourse is a monopoly and should be dismantled as such. The technocracy seems to think hegemony is acceptable in the name of efficiency and ignores - or would like you to ignore - the social peril of this narrow vision."

  • "Just becoming as large as they are actually gives them great advantage in scope, economy of scale and the ease with which they can tolerate 'failure' which could be used to drive others out of competition with them at a small comparative loss. Advantages that are not really part of being a monopoly but still in play as part of a kind of 'you can't fight city hall' syndrome. Things that technically aren't but probably need to be considered in this type of 'anti-trust' action as more central rather than tangential or supporting."

"I believe that it is too easy for tech companies to avoid antitrust action because the technology is an industry that is unlike any industry that was around when these policies were established. New legislation should be put in place to ensure that tech companies are subject to the same restrictions as any other company."

  • "I generally favor antitrust action against any big business (I'm a fan of small business), and I suspect it's especially important in technology given the pace of change in that field."

Weaker (15%) – "We need strong companies to continue building the top quality products we have today. Without them we would be a decade further behind is software and hardware development and security"

Unsure/other (19%) – "In general, I don't like when companies have monopolies anywhere but on the other hand, I feel like the products/services with the companies mentioned got big because they work. If they weren't good or effective, people wouldn't use them. Take Chrome for example, it's a preferred browser for a lot of people because it syncs across devices, is the most user friendly, customizable, and integrates with other google products. That's exactly why people use it."

  • "I struggle with the antitrust cases for the simple fact that I don't see the consumer impact. For instance, when Standard Oil or AT&T was broken up, consumers were suffering high prices with no ability to find a viable alternative in their markets. Yet, here we are going after free tools that millions use. That doesn't make sense to me. Especially when broadband internet has no competition in many areas of the country and there is no choice but to pay ever increasing fees."
