Yes (61%) – "By not paying their fair share the US is shouldering the burden while other NATO countries continue to spend on socialism instead of defense which they depend on the US for. Tariffs also bilk the US out of money spent on European 'niceties' other than defense. Time for it to stop."
"I’m no economic expert but…We send large quantities of money to nato out of the goodness in our hearts. So much so that EU nations can spend it on other goals. EU nations recently have been using that extra spending money to shoot themselves in the foot via destroying their culture and livelihoods with mass immigration and somewhat failed integration. The EU can do whatever they want with their finances and domestic policies and in my opinion should have a strong military, the only question we as Americans should be asking is, why are we giving them so much of our tax dollars to solve their problems when our country is not absolutely perfect? But I’m no economic expert. Time will tell I guess."
"Pretty simple really. European nations have enjoyed the luxury of costly socialist programs that benefit their citizenry, enabled by the defense spending of the USA as their principal ally in event of war. In other words, the people of the USA have been footing the bill for the defense of Europe, and have received nothing in return. Because Europeans didn't have to spend on defense, they could spend on other things. Meanwhile we here in the USA have incurred $36 trillion in debt in the process. This has got to stop if we're ever to balance our incredibly challenging budget."
No (31%) – "$1 out of every $20 for wars that don't happen is outlandish. The 32 country bloc is strong enough and should push come to shove, the spending would up to 10%+ in actual war."
"If the US would stop it's imperial conquests for corporate interests then there wouldn't be a need for defense spending. We've bullied and destroyed so many nations governments that there is no wonder Central and South American people make the journey to the US. NATO was always set up to be a deterrent for another world war. With so many Western countries more focused on national growth and climate change, military spending was an after thought. The current administration has shown that they will assist none of our allies except Israel which isn't on the right side of history themselves."
Unsure/other (8%) – "Unfortunately, I do think it’s in Europe’s best interest to shore up NATO because the US is not a reliable ally at this point time, and Russia remains a threat they will continue to have to prepare for. So spending should increase, not due to Trump’s demands but due to how erratic his administration is."
