It’s a major problem (71%) – "If politicians can't convince all voters that they can fairly and equitably represent them, they should not run. The idea that our country is solely divided into Democrats and Republicans is foolish and insulting. What we want from our elected officials is ethical and honest governing, not the game-playing we have seen for the past several decades."
"As a registered republican in Texas, this is ridiculous. Instead or creating districts that represent the people Congress is elected to serve, this strategy only serves political parties and those (in both parties) that seek to hold onto power. We are replacing a government that serves at the will of the people with one that controls the will of the people. The short term returns are not worth the long term loss of a voice in our government."
"The results of voting should always strive to be as close to the actual vote as possible. If the population of a state votes majority one party, but ends up with more representatives of a different party than they voted for, why even hold a vote? It's obviously not the will of the people. People vote, not land, so districts should be based on population, not geography. These kinds of power grabs are completely immoral and should be against the law. The irony that racial gerrymandering is illegal, but political gerrymandering is not speaks volumes about those that wrote and supported that law..."
"This is one of the worst things about politics in my opinion (and not having term limits for sentate and house reps). I understand the need to have districts for representatives but when they are so disjointed and in some cities there are multiple reps, it makes no sense. I do think instead of continuing to draw lines, we should be adding more representatives. We do not have enough to sustain our population anyway"
It’s a minor problem (12%) – "It’s going to give republicans an advantage. In NM it gave democrats an advantage. Not sure if it's really affecting things."
It’s not a problem at all (8%) – "If you think we actually vote for our leaders, well, aren't you cute."
Unsure/other (9%) – "I want to say that it's a minor problem, mostly on the basis that this has happened for as long as our country has been around and longer than that and we've done okay and our election process hasn't crumbled into pieces, but I haven't kept up with modern day gerrymandering to really know where we're at today."
