In your opinion, does social media need fixing? And if so, how would you fix it?

"Yes, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the ways to fix it don’t align with the bottom line. I question the ethics and morals of the creators of these platforms. If they really wanted to utilize social media for positivity, inspiration, and community, I believe they’d find ways to do it. But instead it seems so much negativity is amplified and content that creates division and confrontation outweighs the positive aspects. Do I use social media? Yes, rarely, and with great restrictions on time spent and purpose. Perhaps the solution is not with the platforms and their leaders but with each of us, the users, and how we want to show up for others and ourselves."

  • "Does it need fixing? I think that is the wrong question. We should be investigating the sources of of our craving. Like alcohol or drugs, it seems as long as we are addicted, the more it will be made available. We should be addressing the causes of the herd mentality before we are overwhelmed by the stampede."

"Social media isn't "fixable" because the inherent problems are not the ones being analyzed and adjusted. The inherent problems are the people who use social media. And I don't mean "this subset of people" I mean all people. Humanity is the problem, and unless we can address our most horrible tendencies (that exist independent of any platform that amplifies them), then there is no solution."

  • "Social media doesn't need fixing. It needs elimination. I can't think of a single development over my lifetime that had done more to negatively impact our lives, and especially the lives of our children, then social media. The cruelty we all know young people to be quite capable of and predisposed to is amplified to dangerously alarming levels. So much so that many teens have been known to commit suicide as a result of it. SM gives a voice to those whose perversions can now reach audiences in the millions. So-called influencers, AKA opportunistic nitwits, present their opinions as if they actually matter. And the truth? Well, good luck finding that. SM is in actuality little more than a snake oil sales platform, and it is selling anything and everything, good, bad, fraudulent, exaggerated, falsified, or otherwise. And worst of all... it knows who you are and what you like, and it will shove as much of that down your throat as it can. It is relentless, tireless and intrusive. And now with AI, it's gotten ridiculous. We'd better find a way to control it before it totally controls us... If it's not already too late!"

"Yes, we need a fix for social media. It is damaging the mental health of all generations by validating opinions and creating unrealistic expectations and comparisons for people. It is egoism on steroids and it’s not healthy for anyone."

  • "Social media is a net negative. There are lots of good things ON social media that I don't think just getting rid of it completely is realistic (keeping up with friends, messaging, finding inspiration, fundraising for good causes), but at the end of the day I think our world would be a lot better if we could only ever access social media on a browser and couldn't have it on our phones. I hate how my phone becomes the center of my world whenever I have Instagram downloaded on it, so I have the app deleted about 80% of the time and only re-download it from time to time when I want to post a big life change."

"Sadly, I think we've leaped too far into the abyss of technology and social media to ever revert back to the "good old days." Stress, anxiety, and difficulty developing in-person relationships have become the norm. We don't need an overhaul on social media; we need an overhaul on where our society places its priorities or we just might destroy ourselves."

  • "Social media absolutely needs fixing, and while I know the social media companies would never do it, I think huge inroads could be made by not suggesting content and only showing users content from those they already follow. Maybe I'm just nostalgic for the old days, but I remember in the early 2000s when Facebook first came out, all my content was my friends' content. Now, I feel like I barely see my friends' content, and I'm constantly being pushed ads, influencers, and "you might also like" posts that are far less intimate."

"Yes, it does. Tweak the algorithm to show users some of the ideologies which are 180° different. I myself made that conscious choice several years ago. I enjoy both sides."

  • "As long as people can make statements from a distance, statements they would never dare to make in person, there will be a constant negative extreme to the dialogue."
