Support (25%) – "The US has struggled for many years in the hard sciences. We need those to rebuild our nation. From everything you listed, I'd have to ask, why aren't universities already doing that on their own? What's objectionable other than it's either coming from Trump or tied to a conservative mindset? It is time to get past these types of objections and begin to think about how we grow our country and improve the lives of our people by enabling them to prosper on their own. That's the true power of education - self sufficiency and learning how to learn and think independently."
"How can anyone argue with this? Institute policies "transforming or abolishing institutional units that purposefully punish, belittle, and even spark violence against conservative ideas." All he's asking is for conservative students to have a seat at the table without being abused, which we all know happens on college campuses. The only provision that gives me pause is sharing information about foreign students. Other than that, this looks like an amazing, and much needed, change for American universities, which has strayed far from their role, which is educating students, and providing avenues to open minds."
Oppose (68%) – "Higher education institutions are an important place for students of all ages to expand their critical thinking skills and build community. For this White House to want to have control over HOW and WHAT students learn is completely asinine and belittles the ideas and talents of the professors, faculty, and leadership of colleges and universities. "Multiple positive benefits" sounds like a crock full of you know what – and we can't allow for this to happen."
"While not opposed to the concept of tuition freezes, the impact/restrictions on the ability to generate free thought and opinion is a key piece of a post-secondary education, and is protected under the Bill of Rights and the core principles of the founding of the country. To coerce institutions to accept these terms for some vague unclear promises is just a further slide into an authoritarian government."
"Who decides what is hostile or promotes violence? And why prohibit content that supposedly incites violence only against conservatives? Is it acceptance to have courses that incite violence against liberals? And with limits on foreign students-what about those who have already started their education at the schools? And can schools truly afford holding tuition steady and giving free tuition for some programs. Not to mention free speech issues. Chilling."
"I don’t disagree with setting limits on foreign student enrollment. All Universities in their budget set goals for foreign student enrollment as they pay cash at a higher rate than American students, which increases cash flow. It’s not a huge problem for American students in undergrad, but once you get to grad school, spots fill up fast and some American students cannot get enrolled. Sharing the foreign students information when asked, seems a bit much but with the Chinese government spying programs I get it. Forcing conservative curriculum is bull… isn’t that typical American politics, have a bill with good needed line items only to be ruined by adding something insane like forcing a conservative curriculum… and of course then there’s the blackmail aspect of this whole thing - the Trump way. I say veto the whole thing."
Unsure/other (7%) – "Like most of the time, it's hard to completely agree or disagree with a huge list of decision's Trump makes all wrapped into one package. However, at the end of the day, the school's don't have to take the federal funding. If they don't like it, they're still free to operate independent from these requests. And also, mandating no institutional units that promote belittling or violence towards conservative movements isn't THAT extreme of a request. I would like to see that be a little more equal towards conservative and liberal requests, but why are we acting like that's going to break the first amendment? I can, however, see how that mandate could be hard to handle in a way that respects the first amendment."
