Support (22%) – "There's nothing inherently wrong with being a for-profit business. I won't say I fully love everything about it - free education and resources for people are so valuable and I hope they continue to make that available - but at some point there's no point in complaining about people making money for a product they developed/sold, that's what happens in a free market."
Oppose (48%) – "For-proft AI will create such a class divide, especially for wealthy companies to take control of their markets. Also, if we remove the greed from AI, maybe it will be used to help create equality at least in the aspect of accessibility. Also, the idea of creating a for-profit AI, leads me to believe that it will be weaponized in many facets. It is already dangerous in he wrong hands, spreading false information and being used as a mental health resource, but also it is terrible for our environment. This rush to have AI everywhere is going to be the downfall of so many things."
"Being a non profit is very legally different from being a for profit organization. If you start as a non profit you should stay that way or leave and start a new for profit company rather than a 'Frankenstein' combo company... even though Halloween is approaching."
Unsure/other (30%) – "If OpenAI is smart, they will demonstrate how to make human-centered decisions as a for-profit structure. But most for-profits prioritize economics over people. Remember, AI stands for "artificial intelligence" not "automatic intelligence"...so we'll see if they can ethically prompt and save themselves from conventional capitalist pitfalls."
"It's a company's prerogative to shape itself how it pleases, but major companies that are shaping the cultural zeitgeist and also more directly the minds of their users deserve more scrutiny. On the whole, I personally despise OpenAI's product - breakneck development of a technology that will outsource human thinking and do it worse, because the tech doesn't actually think - but just because I don't like their product doesn't mean they don't get to do what they want in the market framework. And they were always intended to turn a profit (or did I imagine all those business subscription price points for ChatGPT). So regulators should keep them under close watch, but they should be free to change their structure as they please."
