In your opinion, how will the ongoing US government shutdown end?

Democrats’ demands win out (10%) – "The sweeping Democratic election wins hopefully encourage the Democrats to hold strong on the expiring health insurance subsidies. Until the Federal Government comes up with an alternative to the ACA at rates that are affordable for all, they can't just yank the football away and expect the public who relies on their current (still expensive) health insurance premiums to magically find the funds to pay 50-100% more."

Republicans’ demands win out (34%) – "Any vote not including extending the ACA subsidies is a cave in to Republicans. Johnson has already said he doesn't know if they'll hold a vote on the ACA subsidies. I don't think this comes out in favor of the Dems. I think people believed they put up with all this explicitly to save those subsidies. To bow down to repubs and not include them is a slap in the face to those of us who depend on them."

  • "The capitulation of the handful of Democrats and Independents handed the Republicans the victory they were looking for. There may be minor concessions but not the real compromise or victory that the rest of the Democrats were holding the line on. It renders the whole exercise a huge waste and damages the momentum coming out of the recent election."

Ultimately the democratic party is using the government shut down as political leverage. The problem with that is that the leverage is two sided. Both sides loose in this stalemate. However, the republicans have an advantage from being the party trying to end a pointless shutdown. They are not likely to concede and lose public favor in their constituents. Democrats loose favor as the shutdown continues, being the ones refusing the solution. If the republicans conceded early, they would win political credibility, but as it continues the losses will mount higher than what their demands are. Thus, eventually the democrats will be pressured to end the shutdown and cut their losses."

Some sort of middle-ground compromise (45%) – "I think both parties are going to realize this is hurting people much worse than expected & a middle-ground will be reached. I'm not confident it will solve the problem fully, but I'm hopeful that our government workers will start receiving the pay they deserve."

  • "Because people should by able to compromise especially those who were elected to work for the benefit of their country and it's people."

"There are no winners. A compromise is most likely rather than one side winning and the other side losing. The taxpayers lose, we are the pawns. The conservatives are fighting the encroaching socialism pushed by the progressive democrats. Currently there is free stuff for almost everyone including illegal aliens. If socialism wins the United States will be bankrupt."

  • "A good bill is one in which each side gives a little, no side is completely happy, and no side is completely devastated."

Unsure/other (11%) – "I ultimately agree that compromise needs to happen but I think passing these giant bills with so much in them is ridiculous and stupid and allows both sides to sneak in things that most people don't agree with or like. Pass more smaller bills and show up to work every day like the rest of the country. They shouldn't get paid when there's a shutdown. I think both sides would be more likely to pass appropriate things, compromise, and not wait until the other side chickens out. It's absurd and childish. AND/OR we need to move to a system like other countries where if the gov't shuts down a snap election happens."
