In general, do you agree or disagree with the unitary executive theory?

Agree (27%) – "The founders established rights and defined a structure within the Constitution perhaps without envisioning that the Federal Government would become a bloated monstrosity of inefficiency. They would be appalled at what they see today, in my opinion. The President leads the Executive Branch. It really is that simple."

  • "I agree as it's clearly in the Constitution. If these 'independent' agencies really serve an actual, rather than political, need Congress should find some way to create a legal way to accomplish or control the same thing in a non partisan way but for the 'do nothing' Congress, that sounds too much like work they should be doing. As usual, just as Will Rodgers said, "Our Congress is the best that money can buy!" Or as I like to say, the whole purpose of Congress seems to be getting elected rather than doing anything."

"An unaccountable, entrenched bureaucracy is a real problem that needs to be addressed. Making all bureaucrats "fireable" is a step in the right direction."

Disagree (62%) – "Independent agency heads should remain that way, not influenced by the political party in the White House. If those positions are given as political favors by the political party in power at that particular time rather than the most knowledgeable person and flip-flopped every four years it would leave the agencies floundering and would hurt the American people."

  • "We are supposed to be a democracy of checks and balances with several agencies that are not politically connected so that these agencies continue to maintain stability."

"The current executive has taken a punitive approach to everything he disagrees with. I am of the opinion that the normal checks and balances would keep this from happening, but the normal checks and balances are allowing him to overreach and break laws."

  • "I feel that the president having the power to fire the heads of independent agencies makes it easier for the president to appoint new heads that are apart of the same party, skewing the majority opinion within the Federal government to lean with the President's values."

"Americans are already watching in real-time what unchecked power in the executive branch looks like. It will only get worse for everyone by removing the safeguards put in place to keep POTUS from doing God knows what without being checked."

  • "I disagree because it concentrates too much power in one person. This could also weaken checks and balances and increase the risk of authoritarianism. It also undermines independent oversight as there are certain agencies that exist to prevent political interference. Full enforcement of UET could weaken the safeguards. Not to mention that it goes way beyond historical practice."

Unsure/other (11%) – "I do think the phrase "The executive Power shall be vested in a President” and its original context and purpose needs to be taken seriously and applied practically to actual situations. However, that doesn't mean there can't be other checks and balances within the system, and where that balance lies I'm not sure. I actually think it's a good thing to have a third branch - the judicial branch - determining this conflict between the other two branches. That's exactly how our government should be working."
