In your opinion, should using cannabis be legal or not?

Legal for everyone (67%) – "If we're going to keep alcohol legal, I don't see why we why marijuana can't be legal also (I personally feel they are both bad in excess, but for transparency use both in moderation). I also don't think if we legalize at this point, there will be many more people using it that aren't already. It would allow us to regulate it (which I think is needed), get more $$ from tax revenue, and shift our resources we use criminalizing it to more more detrimental things in our society."

  • "The potential for use as a medicinal or therapeutic treatment, particularly with people in cancer treatment, those with chronic pain, and some with mental health issues, could be life changing."

"It's ridiculous that you can purchase it legally in one state, and go to jail for it in another. Pot is ubiquitous. There is no getting away from it. Why waste time and money trying to stop people from using it when there are other, more serious issues we face."

  • "I would argue that alcohol is far more dangerous than marijuana so it only makes sense for marijuana to have the same relaxed laws as alcohol"

"I agree with legalizing marijuana for those over age 21. However, the smell is AWFUL. Since it’s legalization here you smell it everywhere. People seem to think since it’s legal anyone and everyone can use it anywhere they want at any time. The laws about smoking and vaping indoors seem to not apply to these users. The ongoing daily use as if it’s not intoxicating is mind boggling. It’s out of control. If it’s going to be legal, it needs to be better regulated and not a wild, smelly, stinky jungle!"

  • "The government should not control what I do on my property with my own leisure time as long as I am not harming anyone else."

Medical use only (19%) – "At the end of the day if research results in marijuana being shown to have benefits that outweigh the cons when making it legal, then fine, do what you want. But I'm personally not a fan of ANYTHING that creates dependence and addiction for the sake of recreation and if the medical research ISN'T robust enough right now, we shouldn't make it legal. I am interested though in the fact that reclassifying it could lead to better research."

  • "I have watched my dad become a more frequent user over the course of my lifetime (going from none to daily). As usage increased, he became more withdrawn and less interested in anything to do with his children and family. It literally destroyed by family. Prior to that, he was an active role model I could respect. Now I watch the same thing happening with my brother. I know they will get it either way, but legalization makes it that much easier and frequent."

Not legal for everyone (9%) – "I live in a state where it is legal, and find it to have absolutely negative consequences on everyone who uses it in terms of health, personality, and energy level."

Unsure/other (4%) – "I have a lot of cognitive dissonance on this topic. I do think it should be legal - and heavily taxed - so there's some public benefit. There are legitimate uses for the drug similar to many other drugs and if someone wants to eat gummies or bake it into a brownie for their own use in their home, far be it from me to stop them. However, I HATE smelling weed everywhere. There are cities in the US where just driving through reeks of weed and areas of my own hometown where that is true as well. It is by far one of the most repulsive "everyday" things to smell on a person or in a car/home and I don't want it around my kids. People don't enjoy being around people in public who reek of alcohol or cigarettes either. I also think there needs to be a lot more research done on the effects regarding driving/operating heavy machinery and tests developed to better identify and isolate when a person is actively under the influence. It should be similar to alcohol, which is legal but wildly illegal to use before driving, working, etc. I don't think we're ready as a society to make it fully federally legal, but it could be a good thing for us long term if we can identify some more tests, regulations and laws around it."
