Do you support or oppose the Pentagon’s new National Defense Strategy?

Support (44%) – "While I may disagree with many of this administration's tactics, I do believe the world needs to rely a little less on the US's ability to defend and help make the world a better place. If we are the greatest country in the world, which I believe wholeheartedly we are, we should be assisting other countries in developing and solving global issues. Don't tell me we are great but we aren't helping you."

  • "I love the USA. I do not want this country created by concepts within The Declaration of Independence and The Constitution to be free to now be overrun by enemies intent on destroying that very fabric of our identity. The only choice is to fight with courts at home and strengthen our world to fight within their home countries against dictatorships."

"Defending our homeland is always our first priority. Keeping China in check without starting WWIII is an awesome idea. Wars are nasty and expensive and should only be fought as a last resort. Supercharging our defense industry will help with keeping China in check. Protecting the country and especially the defense industry from Chinese spies is essential. Much of Chinese technology and engineering isn't developed in China it's stolen from other countries. It is time for European countries to take a front seat in their own defense. For years they have looked for the United States to be the point of the spear while giving us the shaft."

  • "I'm not entirely on board, but I do think Europe needs to step up to the table. The United States shouldn't have to police and defend the world. Yes, we should help, but it shouldn't be up to us to provide 100% of the military and weapons, unless European nations were paying us to do so."

Oppose (37%) – "The US defense industry is currently the most robust in the world, and the most expensive. Most of the items on this list are already in play. This is just a deeper sinkhole of taxpayer money to support the president's ambitions and those of his wealthy donors."

  • "This is a clone of the Monroe doctrine. It didn't work then and it's not going to work now. South and Central American countries, Canada and Greenland none of them want us to run them."

"A great way to tank an economy is to pour government resources into the defense industry. This kind of spending dampens economic growth, whereas grants to lower income residents and small businesses heat it up. I could paste one of my graduate program papers in econometrics here, which focused on sector analysis and economic multipliers, but I fear I would put you to sleep. In any case, this is an area I studied extensively in grad school and the proof of that economic theory is borne out constantly across the globe. The US budget is already overbalanced towards spending on defense, and is ignoring the needs of the middle and lower classes. Raising these groups out of poverty would be a more productive use of tax funds."

  • "Stopping Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and elsewhere should top the list of priorities. Nothing else in the past decade has done as much to disrupt global peace."

Unsure/other (19%) – "I think the way this administration is implementing these policies is unrealistic. I do think Europe and all nations should have their own defense systems but the bullying strategy is not the best way to achieve more balance. I definitely do not think the border security we’re currently employing is appropriate and neither is the threatening of sovereign nations. The China strategy of strength not confrontation will be difficult for Trump to maintain. Increasing our defense weapons is a necessity in the current world order."

  • "In theory, these are all good things. In practice, the approach so far is instead making an enemy of our friends. The world hates us more and more, and are building new strategies to ensure they could make both military and economic conflicts more balanced. All of this is ultimately bad for us."
