Support (44%) – "While I may disagree with many of this administration's tactics, I do believe the world needs to rely a little less on the US's ability to defend and help make the world a better place. If we are the greatest country in the world, which I believe wholeheartedly we are, we should be assisting other countries in developing and solving global issues. Don't tell me we are great but we aren't helping you."
"Defending our homeland is always our first priority. Keeping China in check without starting WWIII is an awesome idea. Wars are nasty and expensive and should only be fought as a last resort. Supercharging our defense industry will help with keeping China in check. Protecting the country and especially the defense industry from Chinese spies is essential. Much of Chinese technology and engineering isn't developed in China it's stolen from other countries. It is time for European countries to take a front seat in their own defense. For years they have looked for the United States to be the point of the spear while giving us the shaft."
Oppose (37%) – "The US defense industry is currently the most robust in the world, and the most expensive. Most of the items on this list are already in play. This is just a deeper sinkhole of taxpayer money to support the president's ambitions and those of his wealthy donors."
"A great way to tank an economy is to pour government resources into the defense industry. This kind of spending dampens economic growth, whereas grants to lower income residents and small businesses heat it up. I could paste one of my graduate program papers in econometrics here, which focused on sector analysis and economic multipliers, but I fear I would put you to sleep. In any case, this is an area I studied extensively in grad school and the proof of that economic theory is borne out constantly across the globe. The US budget is already overbalanced towards spending on defense, and is ignoring the needs of the middle and lower classes. Raising these groups out of poverty would be a more productive use of tax funds."
Unsure/other (19%) – "I think the way this administration is implementing these policies is unrealistic. I do think Europe and all nations should have their own defense systems but the bullying strategy is not the best way to achieve more balance. I definitely do not think the border security we’re currently employing is appropriate and neither is the threatening of sovereign nations. The China strategy of strength not confrontation will be difficult for Trump to maintain. Increasing our defense weapons is a necessity in the current world order."
