Which side do you agree with more in the ongoing debate over DHS funding?

Democrats’ side (72%) – "Imagine getting pulled over by a cop in an unidentified car who had their face covered and wouldn't identify themself and claimed you needed to be issued a speeding ticket. You would never be ok with that. We need the same accountability for ICE workers."

  • "Unfortunately we have been shown that ICE would operate with impunity given the chance, so oversight and accountability are necessary. I think funding the TSA separately should be in everyone's best interest, so it is frustrating that Republicans are using that pain point in order to leverage votes for full DHS funding without adding any accountability."

"I had to pick a side and I believe there definitely should be more controls over how ICE goes about their business. However, I am sick and tired of hearing "It's the Democrats who are responsible for the mess we are in" or "It's the Republicans who are responsible for the mess we are in." They both are responsible in my mind for the mess we are in and they need to get together soon to rectify some of these issues or I fear we are plunging deeper and deeper into trouble territory where differences will not be able to be resolved. The "American" solution is what should be the result of any negotiations, borrowing from President Kennedy's statements many decades ago. Seems we've lost this guidance and unless we get it back, we will always be a divided country."

  • "I don't see how requiring proper identification, no face coverings, and better oversight will significantly hinder deportations. There should always be checks and balances. This isn't just because it's right, it's because checks and balances also make systems run smoother and reduce corruption. I thought that was one of the main points of this admin. To "drain the swamp." They should be welcoming the oversight."

"I cannot understand why the proposed changes would "restrict law enforcement’s ability to deport unauthorized immigrants living in the US." Why would the ICE agents want to remain anonymous by wearing masks and not identifying themselves? Do we have local law enforcement wearing masks? Or not identifying themselves? I think this is based more on politics than common sense. It would be nice to see both parties working together for the common good."

  • "For me it's not Democrats v Republicans, it's about getting control of ICE so they fall under the same expectations we have for all US law enforcement and stop going rogue."

"The requests for ICE seems incredibly reasonable, and like practical sense. Identifying yourself, needing a warrant and not wearing a face mask. I fully support making those requirements from ICE. A partial funding should be allowed so TSA agents can be paid."

Republicans’ side (25%) – "The majority of Americans stand with ICE. The two deaths that occurred in Minnesota, although sad, represents an extremely small percentage of citizens affected compared to the number of Americans affected by the illegal immigration which has overwhelmed our country’s resources, citizens and safety."

  • "I feel that typically these shutdowns are just a political move to make the administration in power look bad/ as if they don't have things under control, and are typically around the time of elections. This shutdown will be over shortly after the current primaries. While both sides are guilty of this, this time it benefits the democrats to prolong this shutdown."

"These proposals sound reasonable on paper, but they ignore the reality of enforcement. Requiring agents to identify themselves and restricting face coverings clearly could put them and their families at risk, especially when dealing with dangerous individuals or organized groups. Oversight is important, but tying enforcement officers' hands makes an already difficult job even harder."

Unsure/other (3%) – "I believe both sides have somewhat of a point. The biggest issue that I have is it is not fair to anyone to hold workers hostage like the democrats are doing and the republicans have also. Yes, the workers will get paid after alibis said and done, but it isn't fair to them or the citizens that the house/senate get their regular paycheck, but they expect the workers to work without one."
