In yesterday's Dose of Discussion covering the Inflation Reduction Act, we incorrectly referred to it once as the “Inflation Rescue Act.”🤦‍♀️

Apologies for any confusion.

⏱ Speed Rounds: Quick, Impactful Stories

What’s driving the gender pay gap?

Image: iStock/The DONUT

The gender wage gap between male and female college graduates appears soon after joining the workforce, according to a new WSJ analysis of federal tax records for 2015 and 2016 grads.

🔢🚨 *WARNING*: Incoming data dump…. The analysis drew information from 1.7 million graduates, covering 11,300 undergrad and grad programs at roughly 2,000 universities.

Three years after graduation, median pay for male grads exceeded that of women – who graduated from the same program at the same school during the same year – in nearly 75% of cases. And we’re not exactly talking about a couple of pennies here or there: in almost half of the programs, men earned at least 10% more than women after three years.

  • At Georgetown, men receiving undergrad accounting degrees earned a median $155,000 three years after graduation, a 55% premium over female classmates.
  • Men with University of Michigan law degrees earned a median $165,000 three years after graduation, compared with $120,000 for women.
  • Men graduating with a dental degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio earned a median $140,000 three years out, compared with $103,000 for women.

🤔 What’s driving the gap?… The data speaks for itself – the interpretation, not so much (lies, damned lies, and statistics, amirite?). Per the WSJ, economists who have long studied this issue cite the “motherhood penalty,” the perception that mothers are less committed to their work, as a main reason why women are less likely to be hired, promoted, or given a raise.

Others argue part of the pay gap can be explained by women historically pursuing degrees and careers in lower-paying fields – or simply working less hours – something the federal data didn’t account for.

  • Multiple studies have also shown men tend to negotiate salaries more aggressively than women.

TikTok has a new target

Image: Tenor

Watch your backs, Spotify and Apple Music, because you’re next on the hitlist. ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, has filed trademark applications in nearly a dozen countries in recent weeks, including the US and UK, for a potential music streaming service called “TikTok Music.”

🎶📱 A deeper dive… TikTok, which originally started as Music.ly, is already a hub for discovering and rediscovering music. 67% of users say that they’re more likely to seek out a song they heard on the app on a music streaming platform, plus both Spotify and Apple Music’s top curated playlists currently feature dozens of songs that first went viral on the video-based social app.

For those without TikTok, the current behavior of a user looks something like this: opens app → dating advice *scroll* storytime *sips tea, scrolls* musician playing a song in their room *likes video* → then opens Spotify or Apple Music to save the song to a playlist. Providing an in-house streaming solution would allow TikTok to capitalize upon the traffic, and the sweet, sweet revenue that could go with it.

  • The global music streaming market is projected to reach $30+ billion this year, growing to $44 billion by 2027.

🧠 In the know: ByteDance already operates a music streaming service in India, Brazil, and Indonesia, called Resso. All of the app’s US filings include similar descriptions of TikTok Music’s functionality, like providing the ability to listen to music and podcasts, create playlists, comment on songs, and sing karaoke.

Now… how soon until Facebook follows suit?🤔

Ads are coming to some Lyft rides

Image: Lyft

Your Lyft ride could be getting another passenger soon, whether you decide to carpool or not. According to a blog post published Monday, the ridesharing company has created a business unit called Lyft Media that’ll be introducing in-car tablets allowing riders to track their routes, tip and rate drivers, control the music – and, of course, view ads.

🚗📺 More deets… Lyft has been testing the service in Los Angeles in recent months, and expects to offer it across 25% of all rides in LA, Chicago, San Francisco, and D.C. by the end of this year.

Beyond the in-car tablets, the company also plans to offer location- and time-targeted digital ads on top of cars, as well as on digital display panels at bike-share stations in large cities like NYC and San Francisco.

  • A portion of the overall ad revenue tied to cars will go to its drivers, but the company declined to reveal how much.

📸 Zoom out: Lyft’s new media venture comes three years after Uber first started selling ads through its Eats app, and later began offering ads within its primary ride-hailing app and atop drivers’ cars. Mark Grether, general manager of Uber advertising, said earlier this year that the company’s ad business could reach $1 billion in revenue by 2024.

Me oh my, a story about the Model Y

Image: Reddit/The DONUT

The Tesla Model Y is on pace to become the world’s best-selling vehicle by revenue this year, and the best-selling vehicle by total volume next year, CEO Elon Musk revealed at the company’s annual shareholder meeting last week.

📈 More deets… The Toyota Corolla is currently the best-selling vehicle in the world, with 1,150,000 in sales last year. In comparison, Tesla sold 936,222 vehicles across all four models (S, 3, X, and Y) in 2021, and is on track to sell more than 1.3 million EVs this year – though it doesn’t provide data on individual models.

  • By the end of 2022, the automaker is expected to have the capacity to produce over 1 million Model Y’s annually (MSRP: $65,990).

🚗⚡️ The big picture: If the time of the EV isn’t already here, the data indicates it’s surely coming. More than 5% of all new car sales nationwide were EVs over the first six months of this year, putting America past the tipping point for mass adoption, according to a recent Bloomberg analysis. Assuming the US follows the trend of other countries that have embraced EVs, a quarter of all new cars will be fully electric by 2025.

And on top of that, the recently passed Inflation Reduction Act contains a provision allowing automakers to offer unlimited $7,500 income tax credits to consumers who purchase an EV, though this only applies to cars priced > $55,000.

🔥 The Hot Corner

💬 Quoted…Raided, and occupied by a large group of FBI agents.”

Former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort and home in Palm Beach, FL, was searched by the FBI last night; the agents were reportedly executing a search warrant for material Trump allegedly brought with him when he left the White House, per multiple sources.

  • According to reports, National Archives and Records Administration officials notified Congress in February that they'd retrieved 15 boxes of documents from Trump's Florida residence, among which were some classified materials, and believed there to possibly be more materials remaining at the location.

Further details are still emerging as of this morning, we'll have more for you tomorrow.

Helpful horses

When you think of New York City, you may think of bustling streets, lots of noise, and a concrete jungle.

Someone's first thought of the city would rarely be a horse farm – but for people at GallopNYC, it's just that.

  • The non-profit provides horseback lessons to veterans and people with disabilities, using equine therapy to heal people both physically and mentally.

🐎 Giddy-up, New York... James Wilson, executive director at GallopNY, knows that horses have the potential to change people's lives. He's seen people, time-and-time-again, transform as they get into the saddle.

  • "Almost every year we have a rider who is classified as nonverbal, who says their first word," he shared. "It's incredible when this happens... And very often their first word is trot on. Because a trot is a little bit faster and they're like, 'Let's go, I want to trot.'"
