The spacesuit that will help NASA make history (again)

Image: David J. Phillip/AP

Yesterday NASA pulled a Barney Stinson, revealing a next-generation spacesuit that two astronauts from its Artemis program will wear when they set foot on the Moon in the coming years. Space-suit up Ted, cuz you’re going to the Moon for the first time since 1972.

👩‍🚀 More details… The spacesuit, called AxEMU, represents NASA’s first new design in over 40 years. It was created as part of a $228 million contract awarded to Axiom Space, and reportedly developed with input from experts in the oil and gas, automotive, and theater industries.

And quite surprisingly given the involvement of the last industry, this suit ain’t no sequel. Unlike previous suits worn by Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and others on the Moon – which only allowed them to bunny hop across the lunar surface – the AxEMU suit features built-in joints that provide the necessary flexibility for walking, bending, and twisting.

It’s also a much better fit for female space travelers than any other NASA spacesuit. This will be especially important moving forward, since the space agency has confirmed at least one of the two Artemis astronauts who’ll initially set foot on the Moon will be a woman.

  • Properly-sized suits weren't always a priority for NASA. In 2019, the agency was forced to cancel plans for the first all-female spacewalk in history just days before it launched, after discovering they only owned a single spacesuit that would fit a woman.

🌕👣 Bottom line: When astronauts set foot on the Moon in 2025/2026, they’ll need a suit that can withstand an extreme range of temperatures. The lunar surface experiences daytime highs of up to 260°F, as well as night-time lows around negative 280°F.

🇨🇭🏦 Credit Suisse announced plans to borrow up to $54 billion from Switzerland’s central bank yesterday, after the company’s shares fell as much as 30%. While Credit Suisse’s stock has been on a steady decline for over a year, the catalyst for yesterday’s sudden dip was news that its largest shareholder, the state-run Saudi National Bank, would not invest any more money due to potential regulatory issues. In a statement, Credit Suisse said yesterday’s loan from the Swiss central bank represented a “decisive action to pre-emptively strengthen its liquidity.”

🇸🇦 Major retailers in Dubai have officially dropped a 30% tax on alcohol after it was repealed by the government. The new change, which was enacted on a one-year trial period, is intended to attract more foreign workers and tourists to the Saudi Arabian capital city. Though much like Michael B. Jordan, there doesn’t seem to be all that much room for improvement. In 2022, international visitors spent more than $29 billion in Dubai – nearly twice as much as any other city in the world, per new data from the World Travel and Tourism Council.

🇮🇷 Iranian authorities said 110 suspects have been arrested in connection with suspected mass poisonings of schoolgirls across the country. A total of 7,000+ female students across 25 of Iran’s 31 provinces have suffered from symptoms like nausea, shortness of breath, and vertigo in recent months, after reporting unpleasant odors on school premises. Iranian police told state TV yesterday that they confiscated thousands of stink bomb toys during the arrests, indicating that some of the alleged attacks may have been copycat pranks. Though officials noted that many of the attacks were more serious and left hundreds of students hospitalized.

The sandwiches are not alright

Image: Isa Zapata/Bon Apetit

Every day, about 50% of America eats a sandwich. And according to nutritionists that’s… not exactly great.

⌚🥪 Tick, tock… Like a hoagie in veggie’s clothing, today’s run of the mill, processed meat and cheese sandwich is the same as “eating a heart bomb,” Dariush Mozaffarian, a cardiologist and professor of nutrition and medicine at Tufts University, told the WSJ.

  • According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, the average turkey sandwich in 1996 had 320 calories. Nearly twenty years later, the average has increased to 820 calories.

🗺️ Follow the breadcrumbs: It’s not just about the size either. Per the WSJ, here are a few of the sandwich’s unhealthiest parts (and healthier alternatives):

  • Bread - Highly processed white flour causes a spike to blood sugar and insulin levels, followed by a crash that leaves you hungry (opt instead for 100% whole wheat or whole grain).
  • Processed meats - High in sodium and preservatives, these increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and certain types of cancer (choose fresh chicken, steak, turkey or tuna instead).
  • Condiments - Mustard and ketchup are often high in sodium and added sugar (opt instead for mayo, which it somehow turns out is healthy!).

Surprisingly, the nutritionists said nothing about whether a hot dog is a sandwich, so technically we’re still good to keep scarfing those down.

🔥 The Hot Corner

💬 Quoted…There’s a new top dog in town.

The French Bulldog was Americans’ favorite dog breed in 2022 for the first time in history, breaking a 31-year streak at the top spot for Labrador Retrievers, according to the American Kennel Club’s annual popularity survey.

  • In 2012, Frenchies were ranked 14th among Americans. Since then, nationwide registrations have increased by 1,000+% to propel the breed into first place.

🏀🎰 Stat of the Day: 1 in 9,200,000,000,000,000,000 (9.2 quintillion) = the odds of achieving a perfect March Madness bracket, assuming every game is a coin flip. Though if you know a little bit about college hoops, those odds increase to about 1 in 120.2 billion, per the NCAA.

🤯 Did You Know?... The crews of NASA’s Apollo 11, 12, and 14 lunar missions had to spend three weeks in quarantine upon returning to Earth, due to the possibility they could have caught a novel contagious disease while on the Moon.

Owl remember this rescue

Image: Facebook

Wildlife rescuers were dispatched on a call last week to save a bird stuck in the walls of a home in North East Lincolnshire, England.

  • When a resident heard a distressed bird from inside the walls of her house, she called the Cleethorpes Wildlife Rescue. With no point of entry, she had no idea how the bird could've gotten stuck.

🤣🦉 A simple mistake... Before the rescuers could get to the site, however, the resident called back with a mix of relief and embarrassment.

  • “I’m really sorry…" she said, "it’s a Harry Potter Hedwig teddy; one of the kids has been round and left it under the sofa.”
  • Luckily no birds (real or stuffed 😉) were harmed in the rescue.
