Good morning. With less than 24 hours left for you all to make your voices heard, the early results for our two “What do we call our readers” votes are starting to roll in (minus a few hanging chads – literally, a big group of dudes named chad who all hang out – who are still undecided).

Here’s what we know so far:

  • Vote #1: The collective name: It’s an absolute dead heat tie for first place between “Donut Nation” and “Breakfast Club” – with “Sprinkle Squad” not far behind!!
  • Vote #2: Our readers, as individuals: “Dunkers” has a slight, but certainly not insurmountable, lead on “Weirdoughs,” but it's really anyone’s game at this point.

Well, not anyone’s. In last place by a lot for Vote #2 is “Lil Nuts,” which leads this writer, who may or may not be the man in the Lil Nuts origin story video, to wonder if perhaps everyone thought that listing Lil Nuts as the #5 spot meant that you liked it the most. (It doesn’t. If you want Lil Nuts to be the winner, you need to select it as the #1 choice. Please be sure to do this, and have everyone in your family do it, too. The writer, who’s definitely not named Alex, really needs this).

Vote here before time runs out! Winners will be announced tomorrow.

And now, MORE NEWS.

Medication abortions face an uncertain future in the US

Image: Robyn Beck/AFP

On Friday, a federal judge in Texas officially suspended FDA approval of the drug mifepristone, which is one of two pills used in medication abortions. If the ruling stands on appeal, it would effectively outlaw mifepristone nationwide – even in states where abortion is legal.

💊 Some quick background: Mifepristone, alongside the drug misoprostol, is typically taken during the first 10 weeks of pregnancy to induce an abortion or help manage an early miscarriage.

  • More than 3.7 million women have used mifepristone since it became available in the US at the start of this century, with its popularity gradually rising over time.
  • In 2022, the mifepristone/misoprostol combination accounted for over half of all abortions performed in the US (54%).

👀 Looking ahead… In a 67-page ruling, Judge Matthew Kacsmaryk said the FDA unlawfully approved mifepristone for sale in the US by using a pathway intended for drugs to treat serious illnesses. He also said the agency failed to appropriately assess the drug’s safety before approving it.

But Judge Kacsmaryk delayed the impact of this ruling for seven days, for the purpose of allowing the Biden administration to appeal and seek an emergency stay while the process plays out. Experts say the case will very likely end up before the Supreme Court in the coming months.

  • If the Biden admin’s request for a stay is denied, then US residents would no longer be able to legally access mifepristone starting on Friday. An exception could be carved out for 17 Democrat-led states and D.C., which are currently suing to force the FDA to expand access to mifepristone.

Our daily stroll around the world

🇨🇳🇹🇼 China’s military held a simulated invasion of Taiwan. Chinese officials said the training exercises, which involved 100+ warplanes and dozens of aircraft-carrier-sized ships that over the past three days simulated sealing off Taiwan from the outside world, were held in response to last week’s meeting between Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Beijing conducted similar combat exercises after the previous Speaker, Nancy Pelosi, visited Taiwan last August.

🇷🇺 Evan Gershkovich, the WSJ reporter arrested by Russia, was “wrongfully detained,” per US officials. The official designation by the State Department of Gershkovich being “wrongfully detained” signals the launch of a US effort to free the 31-year-old from Russia, after he was arrested last month over accusations of spying on the country’s military industrial complex on behalf of the American government. One interesting thing: the speed at which Gershkovich received such a designation is “unprecedented,” with the process usually taking several months to complete, US officials told the Journal.

🇮🇳🐅 India’s wild tiger population has more than doubled since 2006. That’s according to the country’s latest tiger census, released once every four years, which found the total number currently stands at 3,167 – or about 70% of the world’s entire tiger population. The census marked the 50-year anniversary of India’s Project Tiger campaign to preserve the species, after an estimated 80,000+ wild tigers were killed between 1875 and 1925 alone.

Dozens of top-secret US documents were leaked via Discord

Images: Anonymous/Times of Israel

The DOJ announced an investigation on Friday into a trove of leaked US intelligence documents “that appear to contain sensitive and highly classified material.” If verified, it represents one of the most damaging leaks of classified documents in modern US history.

📑➡️🌐 Here’s what happened: Starting sometime in January, an anonymous member of a Discord group with just over a dozen members began uploading a total of around 100 US government files providing details on a range of sensitive international topics. And the tea isn’t just hot – it’s pipin’ hot; about half of the leaked files were labeled “Secret” or “Top Secret.”

The documents include:

  • Info regarding ongoing US efforts to spy on Israel and South Korea, two countries America officially considers to be allies.
  • Intelligence that appears to come from several highly-placed sources in the Russian government, signaling the Pentagon has successfully infiltrated Moscow.
  • Classified US assessments of the war in Ukraine dating to February and March, which include details like where Kyiv had placed its troops, as well as the types of weapons, vehicles, and ammunition it had available.

The leak stayed in the small Discord group through early March, when some files migrated to a much larger Discord community. Though much like Mr. Deeds’ butler, this was all still very sneaky. The US government was reportedly unaware of the situation until last Wednesday, when a Telegram account associated with Russian propaganda posted a doctored version of one of the documents.

It’s-a-me, Mario number one!

Image: Universal Pictures

The Super Mario Bros. Movie must've eaten a healthy serving of mushroom power-ups, because it crushed the box office over the five-day weekend. The story of two working-class plumbers brought in $377 million worldwide, the biggest opening for an animated film… well, ever (Frozen II previously held the record with $358 million).

And for Nintendo, the studio behind the video game and Mario Bros. movie, that might just mean a profit of *Dr. Evil voice + pinky raise* 1 billion dollars. Yes, you read that right: profit.

  • According to financial senior analyst David Gibson, the film is on pace to bring in ~$1.2 billion in global box office sales.
  • Add another ~$2.3 billion from its digital release, deduct the costs to make and market the film and – Mamma Mia – you’ve got ~$1.1 billion in profit. Yahoo!

🎮➡️🍿 Zoom out: Mario is the latest in a string of Hollywood success stories for video game adaptations. Sonic The Hedgehog 2 and Uncharted, both based on video games, were the 13th and 14th highest grossing films of 2022.

And it’s not just the big screen – HBO Max’s The Last Of Us (also a video game adaption icydk) was the most in-demand show across the world for nearly two months, following its premiere in January 2023.

🔥 The Hot Corner

💬 Quoted…The great labor market machine is finally slowing down some, but it’s still got a lot of strength left.

The US economy added 256,000 new jobs in March, the Department of Labor reported on Friday, bringing the unemployment rate down to 3.5% – slightly above a five-decade low reached in January.

Some more highlights:

  • The labor force participation rate, which measures the share of Americans working or looking to work, surpassed pre-pandemic levels for the first time at 62.6%.
  • The unemployment rate for Black Americans hit its lowest point on record at 5.0%.

🤖🏥 (More) Stats of the Day: 90% = the percentage of questions on the US medical licensing exam that can be correctly answered by OpenAI’s GPT-4, according to Harvard computer scientist and physician Dr. Isaac Kohane. That’s up from GPT-3.5’s around 60% score on the exam.

Girls just wanna make friends

Image: Holly Cooke

Holly Cooke is a London resident who moved to the city in 2018 from Stoke-on-Trent, a town about 170 miles away. After struggling to make friends following the move, Holly felt overwhelmed with the prospect of meeting other young women through apps or one-on-one.

👯‍♀️ Smart thinking... Holly ended up creating the London Lonely Girls Club on Facebook in an attempt to meet some new people – and quickly realized she wasn't alone.

  • The club is now more than 30,000 members strong. It hosts four to six events each month, including picnics, brunches, and board game nights.
  • "Meet-ups are getting booked up in five minutes," Holly told the BBC. "It's been a crazy journey. I started it because I just wanted to make some friends."
