Good morning. Here's one: what do you call a group of Prius cars?

A Prii. Like, that's the official term, as selected by "the public" in 2011 when Toyota did a poll and 1.8 million people elected 'Prii' over Prius, Priuses, Prium, and Prien.

But did it really win? Does anyone actually call a group of Priuses a Prii? No. They call them Priuses. Who would dare say anything besides Priuses.

Honestly though, when are you ever going to need to reference a bunch of Prius cars in your day-to-day life. "Hey Sandy, I just got back from California and boy oh boy was that a land of the Prii," …is something no one would say, ever.

You'd probably just say "I saw a whole mess of Priuses over there."

Can you tell this California-based writer is a big fan of the term Priuses (and also owns one)?

Anyways, enough chatter, let's do THE NEWS or should we say THE NEWII.

🚀⏰ Ready, Set, Go: Today’s news takes 4.99 minutes to read.

⏱💥 Speed Rounds: Quick, Impactful Stories

The platform formerly known as HBO Max

Image: Warner Bros. Discovery

Succession’s Logan Roy popping zits on Dr. Pimple Popper. Game of Thrones’ Jon Snow fixing up his Winterfell abode on Fixer Upper. Last Week Tonight’s John Oliver getting a makeover on Queer Eye.

These are just a few of the crossovers that will soon be possible on Max, Warner Bros. Discovery’s new streaming platform that combines HBO Max with Discovery+.

Announced at a press event yesterday, Max will strive to combine HBO’s “appointment viewing” with Discovery+’s “comfort viewing.” The platform will launch in the US on May 23 with three plans (pictured above). If you already have HBO Max, you will automatically get access to Max.

🤔 So why lose the “HBO”?... Many experts were confused by the name change – why lose what is arguably the most prestigious part of the brand? According to WBD’s president and CEO of global streaming and games, JB Perette, the HBO brand isn’t “exactly where parents would most eagerly drop off their kids. And yet Warner Bros. Discovery has some of the best-known kids’ characters, animation, and brands in the industry.”

Plus from our anecdotal experience, fans of HBO Max and its shows are… intense about their allegiance to the platform. Meaning they’ll probably stick around, regardless.

👀📈 Looking ahead… WBD reported a total of 96.1 million global subscribers across its streaming services at the end of 2022. And in order to reach its goal of 130 million by 2025, it’s gonna need to be like a kid on an Easter egg hunt and bring some new peeps into the fold. But how, you ask?

Bringing back two of the most successful franchises in history certainly can’t hurt. As part of yesterday’s announcement, the studio hard-launched a decade-long reboot of the Harry Potter series with an entirely new cast, along with a new Game of Thrones prequel.

🇬🇧 The UK government is sending 1 million free vape starter kits to cigarette smokers. The first-of-its-kind program will send vape starter kits to nearly 1 in every 5 smokers living in the UK, as part of an effort to get them to switch from cigarettes to a healthier tobacco alternative. The country’s health ministry has set a goal of reducing the number of cigarette smokers to less than 5% of the population, from 13% at present. In other UK news, Prince Harry announced plans to attend King Charles III’s coronation on May 6 without his wife Meghan Markle.

🇮🇷🤝🇸🇦 Iran’s embassy in Saudi Arabia reopened yesterday for the first time in seven years. The two countries officially restored diplomatic ties late last week, after agreeing to do so in March as part of a China-brokered deal. The foreign ministers of Iran and Saudi Arabia held their first formal meeting of top diplomats earlier this month in Beijing, during which the two Middle Eastern countries agreed to pursue economic cooperation and seek peace in the region.

🇩🇪🌿 Germany is legalizing possession of up to 25 grams (~0.9 oz) of cannabis. The German government had initially planned to allow marijuana to be sold in licensed stores nationwide, but later revised the law so that only special non-profit groups will be allowed to distribute cannabis after receiving pushback from the EU. Growing marijuana is currently illegal under EU law, though many European countries have regulations that decriminalize possession of the drug.

The search for life on Jupiter’s moons begins

Images: ESA | NASA/Hubble

Later this morning (or maybe even as you’re reading this🤔), the European Space Agency is launching a spacecraft that will be the first in history to enter the orbit of a moon other than our own.

The $1.7 billion craft, called the Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE), will investigate three of Jupiter’s largest ice moons – Ganymede, Europa, and Callisto – for signs of extraterrestrial life after arriving at the planet in 2031. In other words, the JUICE is about to get loose.

🤔🪐 Why search on Jupiter’s moons?... While gas-giant planets like Jupiter have been deemed unable to support life, some of its moons are thought to contain huge oceans of liquid water beneath their icy surfaces (and could be habitable).

And unlike exploratory missions to Mars, which have focused on searching for signs of ancient life that’s long been extinct, astronomers believe one or more of Jupiter’s moons may be home to organisms that are still alive today – though they’d likely be tiny or single-celled (the first step of evolution).

At the top of astronomers’ hit-list: Ganymede, the largest moon in the Solar System and also the only known moon with its own magnetic field.

  • Similar to Earth’s magnetosphere, this field protects Ganymede’s surface from dangerous cosmic radiation. Meaning it has a higher chance of sustaining life than nearly all of the other celestial objects in our Solar System.

👀 Looking (way) ahead… If everything goes according to plan, the JUICE spacecraft will enter Ganymede’s orbit and begin searching for signs of life in 2034.

The latest inflation report just dropped

Image: Getty

The Consumer Price Index (CPI), America’s most widely-used measure of inflation, is pulling its best Jay Sean impression and going down, down, down, down, down.

According to Labor Department figures released yesterday, inflation stood at 5.0% over the year-long period ending in March. That’s down from 6.0% in February, and the index’s lowest annual figure in almost two years.

But while inflation may be down on an annual basis, it actually increased 0.1% from February to March. This rise was driven mainly by a 0.6% increase in shelter costs – which make up more than one-third of the entire CPI – and was partially counteracted by a 3.5% decrease in energy costs (which account for a tenth of the entire index).

  • The core index, which excludes often-volatile food and energy prices, rose 0.4% month over month, after rising 0.5% in February and 0.4% in January and December.

📸 Big picture: The CPI has now fallen for nine straight months, down from a 40-year high of 9.1% last June. Though there is still a gap between the current inflation reading and the 2.0% target the Fed is shooting for, which means the US central bank is likely to raise interest rates for a tenth straight time after its next meeting in early May.

🔥 The Hot Corner

💬 Quoted…We can no longer afford a chemical-by-chemical whack-a-mole approach.”

The federal government is vastly underestimating the amount of “forever chemicals” known as PFAS that are present in America’s drinking water, per a peer-reviewed study from nonprofit environmental group Natural Resources Defense Council that was published yesterday.

  • The study found 26 different types of PFAS in drinking water across 16 states – and 12 of those 26 forever chemicals are not currently included in the EPA’s water-purification standards.

🙏 Stat of the Day: 1 in 5 Americans have a family member who was shot dead, and 1 in 6 have personally witnessed a shooting, per a new survey from the Kaiser Family Foundation.

🤯 Did You Know?... António Egas Moniz, the neurologist who invented the lobotomy in the 1930s, was co-awarded the 1949 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his invention; today, the lobotomy is widely considered one of the greatest mistakes in modern medicine.
