| | Good morning. Here’s a question: Of all the movies ever made, which has been seen the most times?
It seems simple, right? Whichever movie has sold the most tickets in theaters is probably a good frontrunner. That honor goes to Gone With The Wind, with 202 million tickets.
But what about streaming and DVD and VHS, oh my?! Older movies have a big advantage here, since they’ve been around the longest and have had the most time to be rewatched…
But, but, but: is that longevity bump enough to beat out the eminently-replayable Star Wars: A New Hope? Or what about Titanic? Everyone saw Titanic.
Then again, movies today have been streamed… A LOT. Like, for example, Netflix’s most-watched film of all time, Red Notice, which has been streamed for a collective 364+ million hours.
One more thing to think about – the global multiplier. There are a lotta people on the planet, and if a movie can be loved by Canadians and Zimbabwians, that’s gonna help. And help it did – according to many, the most seen film of all time is 1979’s Jesus. Translated into 1,977 languages, the film has been seen by an estimated 8.1 billion times by about 4 billion people, according to Wikipedia.
But can you really trust Wikipedia? Guess we’ll just have to call it a tie between Jesus and Red Notice.

🗣🌐 Dose of Discussion: A 360° Look at a Hot-Button Issue | | The APA released its first social media handbook for teens | Image: Getty | This week, the American Psychological Association published its first-ever health advisory regarding how to guide US children and teens’ use of social media.
📝 A deeper dive… In the new guidelines, which are mostly aimed at parents, the APA said it recognizes that social media use among adolescents is inevitable. Thus, its recommendations are aimed at minimizing the potential harm and maximizing the benefits of social media, which the org said is like pineapple on pizza: “neither inherently harmful nor beneficial to our youth.”
A few examples:
- The APA recommends tweens and young teens receive training before being allowed on social media, similar to driver’s ed courses prior to getting a license.
- Once their child has created a social media account, the APA suggests parents should closely monitor usage throughout early adolescence (10 to 14 years old), with kids’ autonomy gradually increasing after that.
- The org also recommends that parents carefully consider their own social media usage in front of their kids, as research has shown it impacts childrens’ future online habits.
📱 Big picture: If you’re a teenager in the US, then odds are you’re also active on social media. A recent Pew Research survey found nearly half of all American teens ages 13 to 17 say they’re online “almost constantly” (up from 24% roughly a decade ago) – with the vast majority of that time spent on social media.
And while scientists have struggled to conclusively tie social media to mental health, a biennial CDC survey of high schoolers’ health and well-being found the percentage of girls who reported feelings of persistent sadness or hopelessness rose from 36% in 2011 to 57% a decade later, with boys reporting a jump from 21% to 29%.
📊 Flash poll: Would you be in favor of requiring kids and young teens to undergo training before creating a social media account?

⏱💥 Speed Rounds: Quick, Impactful Stories | | Our daily hot girl walk around the world | Images: Arif Ali/AFP | BBC | 🇵🇰 Pakistan’s Supreme Court ruled the government’s arrest of former PM Imran Khan was illegal. The Court ordered Khan to be released from police custody, saying his arrest on corruption charges two days prior was invalid because it occurred inside a court complex without the proper permissions. Khan’s initial arrest sparked nationwide protests that sometimes turned violent, with a combined ten deaths and 2,300 arrests reported on Tuesday and Wednesday.
🌎 The WHO declared an end to its global health emergency for mpox (formerly monkeypox). The announcement means the agency believes the crisis due to mpox – which spreads via direct contact with body fluids and causes flu-like symptoms in addition to pus-filled skin lesions – is now under control, with international funding and collaboration no longer necessary. Almost 90% fewer mpox cases were reported over the past three months compared with the same duration before that, WHO officials said.
🇬🇧 The Bank of England is no longer predicting a UK recession later this year, citing reasons that include stronger global growth and lower energy prices. That’s according to the BoE’s Monetary Policy Committee, which voted yesterday to raise the UK’s baseline interest rate from 4.25% to 4.5%. Central bank officials also indicated a high likelihood of future interest-rate hikes aimed at dealing with nationwide inflation, which stood at 10.1% annually in March but is projected to reach 5.1% by the end of this year.

The writers’ strike might last a while | Image: Frederic J. Brown/AFP | It’s been almost two full weeks since Hollywood’s writers strike began. And when Hollywood’s writers go on strike, one thing is certain: the picket signs are gonna be good. “AI cannot draw the hands that wrote these stories,” read one.
“I didn’t survive 12 years of all male comedy rooms to have a robot replace me,” said another.
🍿 What’s happening: Late-night TV shows were the first to feel the strike’s impact. Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Tonight Show, Last Week Tonight, and Saturday Night Live have all been airing reruns since the strike began on May 2nd.
And it doesn’t look like the end is coming any time soon. According to a lawyer familiar with the negotiations, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (which represents Hollywood’s studios) and the Writers Guild of America aren’t close to a deal.
👀 What to expect: Because of their long production cycle, movies should be in the clear. Everything else, not so much.
- Soap operas have about a month of runaway before they run out of new episodes.
- TV shows slated to premiere in the fall, like Abbott Elementary, will be delayed and may release shorter seasons than planned. You can find a full list of affected TV shows here.
- Production for shows with early 2024 releases like Stranger Things have also stopped shooting. This will likely push their release into late 2024, at the earliest.
Wondering what will replace all of these shows? A whole lot more reality TV. Per Deadline, NBC is planning an additional season of America’s Got Talent, while CBS is considering adding a new season of Big Brother to its schedule.

Private space stations – so hot right now | Image: Vast | The International Space Station is currently scheduled to retire and come crashing back down to Earth in early 2031 – and the race to build its first successor is heating up. Yesterday, California-based startup Vast announced a partnership with SpaceX to put the world’s first commercial space station, called Haven-1, in orbit by late 2025.
🛰️ More details… Vast was founded in 2021 by crypto billionaire Jed McCaleb, who has committed $300 million to the company so far.
And while that’s a liiiitle bit shy of the $150+ billion it took to construct and operate the ISS over the past 25 years, Vast also plans to fund its efforts by competing for billions of dollars worth of NASA contracts, as well as selling month-long trips onboard Haven-1 to other space agencies and organizations.
- If everything goes according to plan, Haven-1 will be launched into orbit by SpaceX’s Falcon9 rocket as early as August 2025.
- Future trips to-and-from the four-person space station will be carried out by SpaceX’s autonomous Crew Dragon capsule, which currently serves the same role for the ISS.
📸 Big picture: When it comes to building space stations, NASA is like a baker – its hands are in many pies. The space agency is currently funding multiple private space-station ventures to collectively replace the ISS by the end of the decade, with participants including Northrop Grumman, Axiom Space, Nanoracks, and Blue Origin.

🔥 The Hot Corner | | 💬 Quoted… “A moderate to strong El Niño substantially increases the chance that 2024 will be the warmest year on record.”
In a report published yesterday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said there’s a 90+% chance that El Niño – aka particularly warm ocean surface temperatures in the Pacific – will form sometime over the next three months and remain through at least the end of this year.
- El Niño is associated with dryer seasons in the northern US and Canada, while the opposite is true for the US Gulf Coast and Southeast (which typically experience increased flooding).
🛍️ Stat of the Day: Returning items that were bought online is getting more expensive. An estimated 41% of all US retailers currently charge some kind of shipping fee for returned products, per logistics company Narvar; that’s up from 33% in 2021. A big reason for the rise? An estimated 15%-30% of online purchases in the US end up being returned.
🤯 Did You Know?... In previous versions of Apple’s iOS (14.6 and below), the Weather App was programmed to never display the temperature 69°F.

📰 Quiz Time | | It’s Friday, and you know what that means... | |
|
🤗 Daily Dose of Positive | | Feathery Friends Friday: This dad rocks | Image: @WBSSTL/Twitter | Murphy the bald eagle is entering fatherhood like a pro, building himself a simple nest and incubating his egg like any other dedicated bird parent would.
The eagle is "very protective" of his egg, squawking at any person or bird coming near it.
😬 There's just one little problem... Murphy's hatchling is a rock.
- "He just seems very content with this rock," said an employee of sanctuary where Murphy resides. He diligently turns his rock every few hours like all the other eagle parents.
❤️ A happy ending: When an orphaned injured eaglet recently came through the sanctuary, the workers introduced it to Murphy – and as it turns out, he makes a pretty good stepdad.
