👏🔦 The Sweet Spotlight

🏒 The twists and turns of life are better on skates

Linda Sinrod has dedicated her life to the ice. But, if you asked a college-aged version of herself, she probably wouldn't have guessed things would turn out that way.

The Virginian woman was a figure skater during her time in school, but hung up her skates seemingly for good upon graduation.

It wasn’t until Linda was 35 and visited a frozen pond to casually skate that someone asked her if she wanted to play a round of ice hockey – and she was hooked for good.

  • Linda fell in love with hockey, and spent the next few years mastering the sport as much as she could.
  • At 37, she helped found the first women’s ice hockey team in Washington DC, on which she played for ten years before "retiring" before her 50th birthday.

🥅 Again, however – Linda's retirement didn't last. Though she took a long break from the sport, she eventually decided to come back to it at 67.

  • "I missed playing and saw that a former teammate was coaching the Prince William Wildcats," she said. "So, I decided to join the team, even though she warned me that I was too old. Everyone else on the team was at least 20 years younger."

She ended up holding her own with the young'uns for quite a while – but like the tortoise to the hare, eventually the age gap caught up. Linda played for the Wildcats for another decade before being asked to leave the team at 75 due to her declining speed and agility.

But she didn't let a little rejection stop her (shooters shoot). Most recently, Linda joined the Capitals Women's Hockey League, where she still plays.

👀 Looking ahead... Linda officially owns the Guinness World Record for the oldest female hockey player, at 80 years and 7 days – and at 82 years old, she continues to break the record every day.

... a new great pumpkin has been found🎃.

Travis Gienger, a horticulture and landscape design instructor, grew this massive pumpkin at Anoka Technical College in Minnesota. And the word "massive" is not used – wait for it – lightly (*cue belly laugh*).

  • The gourd weighs a whopping 2,749 pounds, more than enough to take home the first-place prize at the 50th Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off.

🍩 DONUT Holes

🐻 The winner takes it all... The winner of Fat Bear Week 2023 has been announced. This year's winner, chosen in an online bracket-style tournament by the public, is "128 Grazer," a female bear who has successfully raised two litters of cubs on her own and is fiercely protective of her babies. The mama bear received 108,321 votes to claim the title, beating out the runner-up by over 80,000 votes.

🍳 The new and improved breakfast club... Richard Brooks and his friends recently formed what they are calling the "$1,000 Breakfast Club." The group of 10 (sometimes more) saves $100 apiece every few months, then pools their money to leave a more-than generous tip on their breakfast bill. Most recently, they left their IHOP server $1,300.

🐾 Just because it's cute... Believe it or not, Halloween is just around the corner. And whether or not you have a four-legged-friend at home, you'll get a kick out of these 33 adorable pet costumes. My personal favorite? The cat triceratops🐈🦖.

😇 Mindfulness Moments

🧘‍♀️ Breathe in, breathe out...

Box breathing is a simple meditation technique that involves breathing in a four-part "boxed" rhythm. It can be done anytime, anywhere, and will help you ground yourself and come back to your center of breath.

👍 Anyone can do it... Give it a try if you feel like you could use a bit of recentering. This simple video (3 mins) will explain exactly how😌.

Enjoy!

P.S. Don't have time to watch the video? Try breathing purposefully for a few moments with the gif above.

🏆 What's Your Win?

😍 It's finally here

Welcome to What's Your Win, the section of the newsletter where we get to celebrate all of the positive news happening right here within our DONUT community.

There's always something to celebrate, and reading your wins each week makes me think of what I'm grateful for in my own life. Let's get started!

🚙 Jordan A. from Lowille, New York, is getting behind the wheel and into the workforce...

  • "I just sent in my first job application. And i'm about to get my driver's permit!"

⚽️ Lauren O. from Austin, Texas, is celebrating with her team...

  • "After a year and a half of playing soccer and getting second place (4 times), my soccer team finally won the championship in our league! It was such a great feeling to finally reach that milestone."

🙏 Diane C. from Papillion, Nebraska, is overwhelmed with gratitude...

  • "This is a smaller win where I woke up feeling extra grateful for the little things in life, but I've noticed it happening a lot lately and want to share!"
  • "Fall is my favorite season for many reasons," she said. "Cooler weather = less bugs, opportunities for fun fall activities like going to pumpkin patches and beautiful outdoor shows, and I can't leave out PSL at Starbucks😉. The other morning after I woke up and lied in bed before getting ready for the day, I couldn't help but think how incredibly grateful I am for the life I have. My husband and our dog were fast asleep next to me, safe and sound, in our home that we've made into our own and love, in a neighborhood where we enjoy our helpful neighbors, and the weather was going to be a gorgeous high of mid-70's. Although I would have loved to sleep in a little longer at the time, I was excited to get going and enjoy all the things that life has to offer."
