The Cardinal Hayes High School's football team was never really set up for success.

The school itself is located in the poorest congressional district in the nation. And on top of the lack of funding and support, the team was forced to either practice on an outdoor home field that was smaller than regulation size, or an unsafe game field in a public city park. Their only access to gym equipment was an outdoor weight room covered in rust.

  • The Bronx, New York-located school was previously called one of the "worst teams" in their league, with the odds of them taking home the New York State Catholic High School State Championship in December at basically zero.
  • BUT – thanks to a dedicated coach and determined group of inner-city students, they proved you really never should underestimate the underdog 👀.

Hard work = success... Despite all these challenges, Cardinal Hayes ended up taking home the state title in December. And, since their win, the team has been like busy bees – getting their flowers. The school has been gifted $30,000 of new equipment from Riddell, new cleats for every player from Nike, $50,000 from Bank of America, and multiple college scholarships to senior members of the team.

  • "One thing we're guaranteed is we're gonna get knocked down," said Cardinal Hayes President Michael Carey. "The question is how we respond."

💪📈 Bottom line: To quote ABC News: "The players have known all along that they are not their circumstances. And now everyone else does too."

🚌 Everybody is someone's hero

Elementary school bus driver Larry Farrish Jr. loves his job. "It’s my passion because I get to build bonds with the children,” the driver shared. “I truly love every minute of it.”

So, when Larry noticed that one of his first-grade students, Levi, looked especially down one morning on his way to school, he couldn't help but ask what was going on. Turns out it was pajama day, and Levi didn't own any pajamas to wear to school.

🤔 Quick thinking... As soon as Larry dropped off the kids, he rushed to the dollar store to buy Levi a new pair of PJs.

  • Levi cried tears of joy and disbelief when his bus driver showed up at the school soon after with his new pajamas. “I can tell Mr. Larry is nice and his heart is filled with joy,” Levi told Today.com. “When he got me the pajamas, I did a happy cry.”

🍩 DONUT Holes

Image: Hogle Zoo

👆🐱 The "sassy cat of the savanna"... Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City, Utah, just announced the arrival of one of the world's deadliest cats... who also happens to be one of the cutest. Gaia, the eight-month-old Black-Footed Cat, is part of the zoo's conservation breeding program to save the species. But don't let those Puss-in-Boots eyes fool you – she's "the bada** of the Botswana."

📆 Time off = time off... With its sunny beaches and cute koalas, Australia already seems like a dream destination. And apparently, it's favorable to work there, too. The country's Senate recently passed a bill that would grant workers the "right to disconnect" – aka legally protect employees who decline to answer work calls and emails outside of working hours.

😻 Speaking of cute cats... A new exhibit in London's Somerset House is examining exactly why we're all obsessed with cute things. From tiny kittens to fluffy dresses to china sculptures, the exhibit is a deeper look into what – and why – we find certain things cute!
