👏🔦 The Sweet Spotlight | | 🎩 Welcome to Dapper Day | Images: Esta Pratt-Kielley/Maine Public | When eight year old James Ramage sifts through his closet before school, he has to make a difficult decision: "do I choose the black suit or the blue one?" James' school doesn't have a uniform, but the third grader dons a suit at least once per week out of choice. And he's not the only boy in his class who gets dressed to the nines – James started a school-wide "Dapper Wednesday" to encourage other students to dress up, too. How did a tradition like this start? It all began when James started watching the TV show "Fuller House," and was inspired by a character who dresses up regularly. - The then first-grader asked his mom for a suit. And while it was difficult for her to find, he eventually got one of his very own.
- As soon as James put it on, he says he felt different. "I felt good," he shared. "Because I thought when I looked at it in the mirror, it looked cool on me."
|
|
| Trendsetter: James started wearing his suit to school occasionally. And, soon enough, some of the other kids were inspired to dress up as well. Now, Dapper Wednesdays are a thing school-wide. Some teachers and the principal have even started taking part. What they're saying: "Everyone just like feels good with a smile on their face when they walk in," says fellow student Lincoln Bolitho. "And it's nice to see it because it feels like, three guys started this. And now kids are coming in with smiles. And suits." 👔 Bottom line: James now owns three suits that he rotates: a black one, a navy one, and a red-and-green-striped Christmas suit. And, more than anything, James' parents are thankful that their son's fashion sense has helped his overall confidence. "It's definitely helped his confidence and made him feel stronger and better about himself," his mom shared. "So that's important to us." |

📸 Pic of the Week | | 🌈 Happy Holi! | Image: Kristin Russ/Getty Images | Holi, aka the Hindu festival of colors and love, was celebrated yesterday in India. The tradition marks the start of spring and is "purely a day of fun," with thousands of people gathering in the streets and their communities to throw colored powders and paints on each other to celebrate. In the know: Each color means something different: - Blue is for Krishna, a Hindu god portrayed with blue skin.
- Green is symbolic of rebirth and new beginnings.
- Red is the color of marriage and can symbolize matrimony or fertility.
- Yellow, the color of turmeric, is often used on auspicious occasions.

😇 Mindfulness Moments | | 🌷🌷 It's self-aware girl spring | Much like reading Positive DONUT each week, journaling regularly can have some amazing benefits for humans' overall well-being. The simple act of putting pen to paper can help relieve stress, improve our overall mood, and even offer physical benefits such as lower blood pressure😮. Maybe those who say "the pen is mightier than the sword" are on to something. 🎉 Spring is here. And with the change of seasons upon us, it's always nice to take stock of how you're feeling and what you're looking forward to the rest of the year. On board? Try out a few of these spring-themed journaling prompts: - Talk about your ideas for personal growth this spring.
- How do you deal with the changes in life, such as the transition of each season? Are you indifferent, or is it hard on you? What can you do to help support yourself through these transitions?
- Talk about a few things you could do daily to have a more positive mindset as the seasons change.
- Do you remember your goals from the beginning of the year? How are you doing with them?

What's bettter than that?! There's always something to be grateful for. Check our the submissions we recieved this week! 👯♀️ Megan H. from Chicago, Illinois, can't wait to have her bestie close by... - "My best friend is finally moving to Chicago from his small hometown after falling in love with the city while visiting me last year. He's been working determinedly to make that dream come true, overcoming so many setbacks and struggles along the way, and all of that work is finally paying off. Two weeks from today we'll be driving a Uhaul up to the big, beautiful city that's about to be his home, and I'm so proud of him! Rediscovering the city through his eyes has been really making me fall in love with it again too, and I'm excited to continue getting to share it with him."
📚 Grace K. from Farmington, Arkansas, is celebrating her scholarship... - "Last week I was awarded a Fellowship from the University of Arkansas! It's a scholarship worth $20,000/year plus research and study abroad opportunities. I've been working really hard for a long time to get my college paid for, so it feels really good to finally have something work out."

🙏 Submit Your Wins | | Me, thinking about all of the possibilities of wins to send in: | Image: Giphy | 🥹 Can I be real with you? "What's Your Win" is my favorite part of the newsletter. When I started brainstorming Positive DONUT nearly three years ago, this section was one of the first things on my vision board; I wanted a place where people could feel safe and supported to share their day-to-day wins with a community of like-minded and positive individuals. How special is that? However, we've been struggling lately to get new submissions. So let me know – is there anything we could do to this section to improve? - Would it be helpful to submit your wins anonymously, or maybe a specific prompt would be more helpful to get those creative juices flowing? We'd hate to scrap this section, but with 20,000+ of you, we need your help to revive it!
🙏 TYSM in advance. I read every response and appreciate any feedback you may have🥰. And, while we're on the topic, submit your wins here to be featured in next week's newsletter. It can be something as simple as cleaning your room all the way up to a huge work promotion or engagement – like high-stakes poker, the win limits do not exist! Submit your win(s) here. |
