πŸ‘πŸ”¦ The Sweet Spotlight

β˜€οΈ It's pretty hard to eclipse this story

Image: Caitlin Moriarty

Imagine this: It's 1978, and you're studying solar eclipses in your high school science class. While looking over a worksheet mapping out future solar eclipse patterns handed out by your teacher, you notice that one is coming to your hometown – in full totality – 46 years in the future.

  • β€œHey, circle that one on April 8, 2024,” says your teacher, Mr. Moriarty. β€œWe’re going to get together on that one.”

For years, New York high school science teacher Patrick Moriarty said this to his students. And he figured they all would forget. Decades went by and life went on, but, as 2024 inched closer and closer, Patrick never forgot the promise he made.

Suddenly, it was 2022 – and Patrick started to wonder, "If I hosted this eclipse get-together like I'd always said, would anyone come?

He sent out an invite πŸ’Œ.

  • Patrick had told his students back in the '70s and '80s that he would put an ad in the newspaper, but, given it was 2024, he decided a Facebook group would do.
  • As word spread and the event reached his past students, he was shocked when hundreds of them said they wanted to come. He decided to make a day of it, buying over 100 pairs of eclipse glasses and securing catering from a local pizzeria.

Image: Today

When the day finally rolled around – one Patrick had been talking about for nearly five decades – around 100 of his past students showed up. Most of them are in their 50's now, with careers and families of their own.

  • Patrick was able to speak with students whom he hadn't seen in 40 years. And although he didn't recognize some of their faces anymore, he remembered almost all of their names.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ«πŸ’ͺ Bottom line: β€œWhen teachers go into education," he shared with The Washington Post, "they hope that they can be that kind of teacher that would have an impact on people and make a difference for people. And this event right here just firmed it up for me that I guess I did okay."

πŸ“Έ Pic of the Week

⬇️ Look at this cute little thing

Image: Facebook/Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa

You're looking at the incredibly rare northern marsupial mole, an animal that spends so much of its life underground in the Australian Outback that it's still largely a mystery to wildlife biologists.

  • The tiny creatures are also called Kakarratul by the Martu, the traditional residents of most of central Western Australia.
  • Kakarratul can "swim" through sand, using their noses and claws to move in a unique method that allows them to tunnel and fill behind them simultaneously, similar to the sandworms from Dune. They're so difficult to find (and teeny tiny – this little guy is propped up on someone's finger) that we don't even know how many there are in the wild.

☝️ Anotha one: This was the second sighting in six months, an "incredible" occurrence, according to a Martu organization.

🍩 DONUT Holes

πŸ‘‘ What a comeback... Sophie McGarva was relentlessly bullied in middle school for her body. After putting up with it for years, the 21-year-old finally decided to turn the hate on its head. Now, she's preparing to compete in the semi-finals of the Miss England pageant.

πŸ₯ A medical marvel... Thirteen-year-old Kai Xue is one of only 21 people in the world to ever be diagnosed with WILD Syndrome. The genetic condition is incredibly rare and under-researched – however, the teenager just became the first person to be cured.

🍳 Treasure hunt... One Grand Rapids, Michigan, resident was surprised to find a 100-year old-time capsule hidden in his ceiling while completing a home repair. Inside the pile of objects? Newspaper cuttings, a handwritten note, photographs, and a teeny tiny cast iron pan.

πŸ† What's Your Win?

🀩 You guys are, like, super awesome

Welcome to What's Your Win, the section of the newsletter where we celebrate all of the good news happening right here within our Positive DONUT community. We received so many responses this week that we can't fit them all in today's edition (you're the best!!), so if yours isn't here, don't fret – you'll be featured in next week's newsletter. Now, without further ado...

❀️ Steph B. from Belfast, Northern Ireland, is making huge progress to a healthier lifestyle...

  • "I stopped binge eating last year and now I am one week off my intolerances and feeling 100% better. No more sluggish me, its not a massive thing but I've found it hard for years! This time I have my partner cheering and being there every day and it feels right, one little step to a better me!"

πŸ«‚ Andrea R. from Verner, Ontario, Canada, is grateful for second chances...

  • "I just officially got back together with my husband! We've been separated since December, and we've finally reached a point where we feel we're ready to try again. It's going to be a crazy few weeks with moving, but I'm so looking forward to being in the same city as my husband and my dog again!"

πŸ™Œ Guadalupe A. from Emeryville, California, is making career moves...

  • "I'm moving on to the 2nd and 3rd interviews for a new job opportunity. It's my first time really looking into a job in the US since I immigrated here."

β˜€οΈ ShaΕ•on Daniels from Lebanon, Oregon, is proving that sharing is caring...

  • "We didn't get to see any of the eclipse on Monday because of clouds, but my bestie lives in Ohio and called me. She was so excited and happy and amazed that I cried just from being able to share that. I was as happy as she was. Love is infectious and sharing is a gift."

πŸ™ Submit a Win

⬇️ Real footage of me reading all your wins every week

Now I totally get it: life can get busy and overwhelming. It's hard to see the bright side sometimes.

  • But this isn't about toxic positivity – it's about perspective and expectations (which some, like our CEO, say is the secret to happiness). There truly is always something to be grateful for, even if it's as simple as your favorite cozy blanket or a fantastic latte you had earlier today.

What's Your Win is about taking a moment to remember the good things in life. Big or small, it's all worth celebrating. And who knows? Sharing your win might inspire someone else to recognize the good in theirsπŸ₯°.

Share your everyday wins and gratitude here for a chance to be featured in next week's newsletter and have a positive impact on a stranger's life.

Submit a win – or a friend/partner/family member's win – here.
