๐๐ฆ The Sweet Spotlight | | ๐ฅ Our new hero | Images: BBC | ๐ Meet Cerri Hooper and her son, Lloyd Martin, who successfully completed the London Marathon earlier this month. Lloyd has Down's syndrome. And as he jogged over the finish line at mile 26, he was handed the Guinness World Record for the youngest person to complete a marathon in the intellectual impairment category (LL2). - "In Lloyd's words," shared Cerri of her son's accomplishment, "it's achieving his dream."
But the path to getting there wasn't easy. |
|
| Lloyd only started training five months before the big day, which, even for neurotypical people, is not a lot of time. - The determined 19-year-old is an accomplished Special Olymphics athlete in football and gymnastics, but running is new for him. Lloyd ran nearly every day during his training period, with one long-haul run weekly to get him used to rigorously being on his feet for multiple hours.
Race day: Cerri guided Lloyd through the race, cheering him on and encouraging her son the whole way. - "We did not say a lot when we crossed the finish line," she said. "We just both burst into tears."
๐โโ๏ธ Bottom line: Lloyd's run was an important achievement for people with Down's syndrome and other intellectual disabilities. "It was absolutely amazing," shared Cerri. "He ran continuously for 14 miles [22.5km] which is the longest he's ever run before... really anything is possible if you put your mind to it. With a bit of work, you can achieve it." |

๐ธ Pic of the Week | | ๐ฌ Surf's up! | Image: Aaron Hughes/World Surf League/Getty | As surfer Gabriela Bryan competed in the Margaret River Pro, a world championship tour event held in Western Australia, on Sunday, she shared a โmagicalโ moment with a pod of dolphins, who rode the wave with her during her final round. - The dolphins must have brought her some luck โ she ended up winning the entire event.
๐ฌ What she's saying: โWhen I kicked out, I was just wow!" the surfer shared. "That wave was sent to me by someone, the dolphins in it. It was magical.โ |

๐ฉ DONUT Holes | | ๐ค Like WALL-E, but fiercerโฆ The Fairbanks, Alaska, airport has a new employee working to protect wildlife: Aurora the robot. Disguised as a predator to keep animals safe and away from runways and plane infields, Aurora can mimic a coyote or fox, depending on the animals close by that day. ๐ซ A daughterโs giftโฆ Thirteen-year-old Symaria passed away unexpectedly in February, leaving her family deep in grief, but grateful for the time they had with their loving and kindhearted daughter. An organ donor, Symaria was able to save someone very special to her after death โ her father, who was suffering from kidney failure and going through dialysis. ๐บ๐ธ What does America mean to you?โฆ This question is being posed to students around the country in hopes of them winning one of 75 spots on the trip of a lifetime to the Statesโ most historical landmarks. The โAmericaโs Field Tripโ contest, hosted by America250, is in preparation for, and expectation of, America's 250th anniversary in July 2026. |

๐ What's Your Win? | | ๐ Let's celebrate you | Welcome to my favorite part of the newsletter, What's Your Win, where we celebrate all of the good news happening right here in our Positive DONUT community. There's nothing too small to celebrate โ and we want to be your personal hype-people! Check out the wins we received this week: ๐ซถ Ali M. from Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, is helping her students find self love... - "I'm an 8th-grade teacher. And before state testing, we had the students say one nice/positive thing about themselves, and their answers were SO CUTE!! 'I'm a really good son,' 'I help my mom a lot,' 'I'm awesome at drawing,' and 'I'm a creative thinker,' were some of them. Coming from these moody 8th graders, it just reminded me how precious time is and how kids are just kids! I love this whole group and being a teacher โ and hopefully helping them to see the best in themselves :)"
โค๏ธ Azra S. from Seattle, Washington, is thankful for her mom's recovery... - "My mom had a near-death health complication three years ago, which started a chain of health problems leading ultimately to a knee replacement six weeks ago. Sheโs been in terrible pain, not sleeping, and crying every time I call. As of this week, sheโs turned a corner with no pain and sheโs able to walk on her own in the house. We are all thrilled that sheโs on her way back to her normal life, putting this incredibly difficult chapter behind her."
๐ช Michelle M. from Yacolt, Washington, is making major moves in her health... - "I started a '75 Hard' challenge with my brother, husband, and a few friends. We modified it a little to be more attainable, but one of the goals is to exercise 45 minutes a day, 20 of which must be outside. I'm already on day 13 and I'm doing so, so good! Going from maybe 60 minutes a week of exercise to over 300 minutes feels amazing. I grab my 45 minutes throughout the day โ in the morning, on lunch, parking far away to get groceries, and playing disc golf or lifting weights with my husband. Google Fit tracks my walks and shows me a cool map of my walking path โ it makes it more fun! I've been walking 6-8 miles a week and loving it. Washington's spring is full of sunshine and flowers for the most part, but I love the rain too when it comes!"
