DACA just turned 12, but its days may be numbered

Image: The Mobile Workforce

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy (DACA) celebrated its 12th anniversary on Saturday. The milestone comes as the Obama-era program, which applies to more than half-a-million undocumented migrants, faces an uncertain future.

Background: DACA protects immigrants who were brought illegally to the US as children from being deported, and allows them to apply for a renewable work authorization upon reaching adulthood (which includes a Social Security number). However, DACA recipients – aka “Dreamers” – aren’t provided lawful immigration status or a path to US citizenship.

  • The program’s history has been marked by legal and political challenges since it was enacted in 2012, including an attempt from former President Trump’s administration to overturn DACA that was struck down by the Supreme Court.
  • DACA’s current legal predicament stems from a 2021 court ruling that declared the program unlawful and banned new applications, but also allowed current Dreamers to keep their coverage while the appeals process plays out (likely all the way to SCOTUS).

Outside of the courtroom, DACA is facing another existential threat. Barring any presidential or congressional action, all undocumented migrants entering adulthood will cease to qualify for DACA protections and work permits starting next year, since they would have entered the US after the program’s required arrival date of June 2007.

Zoom out: Immigration is shaping up as a key issue for US voters heading into November’s presidential election. Over a quarter of Americans (27%) say immigration is the most important problem facing the US right now, with the issue topping Gallup’s trend report for the third straight month (its longest such streak since 2000).

Our Monday morning stroll around the world

🕌 Islamic pilgrims began the final rites of Hajj, as other Muslims celebrated the start of Eid al-Adha. More than 1.8 million Muslims from around the world congregated in Saudi Arabia this weekend for closing rites of the Hajj, a five-to-six-day pilgrimage that each Muslim is required to make at least once in their lives, if physically and financially able. The Hajj’s closing rites came as Muslims across the globe began celebrating Eid al-Adha, one of two main Islamic holidays.

⚽ The 2024 Euros kicked off on Friday. The once-every-four-year competition, which determines the best national soccer team in Europe, is the world’s most-watched soccer tournament outside of the World Cup. Italy is attempting to retain its 2020 title, with odds-makers also placing England, France, and Germany among the favorites to win the 24-team tournament (which continues through July 14).

🇺🇦🇷🇺 Dozens of nations agreed to support Ukraine's “territorial integrity.” At a two-day peace summit in Switzerland over the weekend, 78 countries – including the US, Japan, and many European nations – signed an accord calling for Ukraine's “territorial integrity” to be the basis of any agreement to end its ongoing war with Russia. The charter wasn’t signed by a handful of attending countries, including India, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, South Africa, and the UAE. Russia wasn’t invited to the peace summit, while China chose not to attend.

“Inside Out 2” crushes its box office debut

Image: Giphy/Canva

Anxiety turned to Joy for Pixar execs this weekend, as Inside Out 2 cruised to a $155 million domestic debut – the highest opening of any movie so far this year, as well as the second-highest theatrical opening of an animated film… ever.

  • 12 million people saw Inside Out 2 over the weekend, according to data from EnTelligence. The last time a movie pulled in north of 10 million people was Barbie (2023) – which, coincidentally, was the last movie to top $100 million during its domestic debut.
  • Inside Out 2 also has a current draw of 36% Hispanic and Latino, making its audience more diverse than any other Pixar movie outside of Coco.

Pixar needed a win. The Disney-owned animation studio has struggled at the box office in recent years, with Pixar-made films like Turning Red, Soul, and Luca skipping theaters and going directly to Disney+ during the pandemic.

Pete Docter, Pixar‘s creative chief officer, in a 2023 interview with Variety said the company’s Covid-era, direct-to-streaming strategy “trained” audiences to watch the studio’s movies at home – hence the comparatively less-embraced theatrical releases of 2022’s Lightyear and 2023’s Elemental (which started slow but eventually ended up grossing ~$500 million worldwide).

🤔 Could the US box office be looking up? The real-time box-office revenue gap between 2023 and 2024 shrank from ~26% to ~24% after this past weekend – with tentpole titles like Despicable Me 4 (July 3), Twisters (July 19), and Deadpool & Wolverine (July 26) still yet to debut.

  • All of George Strait’s exes may live in Texas – but the Lone Star state is also home to tons of rabid fans. The “King of Country Music” on Saturday night set a new all-time attendance record for a ticketed US concert, drawing a more-than-sold-out crowd of 110,905 people to Kyle Field, Texas A&M University’s football stadium. This figure eclipses The Grateful Dead’s previous mark of 107,019 set in 1977, and adds to Strait’s significant list of accomplishments (which includes 60 No. 1 singles, the most of any artist in any genre).

🔥 The Hot Corner

🥵 Stat of the Day: Now is probably the time to dig out your combination mini-fan/spray bottle and stock up on freeze-pops, according to meteorologists. Over the next week, 265 million Americans – or 82% of the population – are projected to experience temperatures above 90°F, in what the National Weather Service describes as the first major US heat wave of the year. Major cities most at risk for extreme heat include New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Indianapolis.

Pinecone or pangolin?

Image: Panthera

Have you ever seen a walking pinecone?

Allow us to introduce you to pangolins, the world's only mammal fully covered in armor-like scales; they roll up into a pinecone-like ball to protect themselves when threatened.

😥The sad truth: While pangolins are adorable, they're also the most-trafficked wild mammal in the world due to the high value of their scales.

  • But there's hope for the unique species: a wild giant pangolin was spotted last year in Niokolo-Koba National Park in Senegal, West Africa – 24 years after they were thought to have gone extinct in the area.
