ππ¦ The Sweet Spotlight | | π¨βπ³ Not your usual backyard BBQ | Images: SWNS | Ten years ago, Panikos Panayiotou built a restaurant in his backyard. The father of three originally built the structure in honor of his own father, who passed away two years prior from small-cell lung cancer. It started as a passion project; now, ten years later, people book months in advance to try his famous cooking. Let's rewind: Panikos' father was in the middle of building his own backyard restaurant when he passed away. Panikos told Fox News Digital that to honor his Dad, along with his Greek heritage, he decided he would make the restaurant happen himself. - The whole project took five months to complete; the Greek kitchen now seats up to 75 people and is only open six weeks out of the year. Panikos donates almost all of the profits to charity.
- "My father always wanted to run a traditional Greek taverna from his home," he shared, "so itβs a way of keeping his memory alive and raising much-needed money for charity."
- Panikos and his wife, Michelle, volunteer their time for six weeks each year to cook and serve the community. In the ten years since their founding, they've donated $70,000 to local charities.

|
| It's not just the charity aspect that has people booking tables. The food is seriously good. Panikos opens online table reservations two months in advance, and they're almost always booked within a few days. β€οΈ Do it for Dad... Regardless of his restaurant's success, Panikos has never forgotten the reason why he started it all a decade ago: - "Our traditions are to have a relationship with your loved ones in the afterlife, so you do good deeds in memory of them. And this is what we do here every year. This is for him."

π© DONUT Holes | | πΈ No Mo' Loans... Students at John Hopkins University received the surprise of their lives after Bloomberg Philanthropies donated $1 billion to the school, making medical education free for most of them. βAmerica needs doctors, and we need the best minds in medicine,β dean Dr. Ted DeWeese said. βSo this gift that Mike Bloomberg gave is going to help us find those students, those brilliant students, who might have otherwise not gone to medical school.β π Save the bees... A population of rare bilberry bumblebees (is that not the cutest name ever?) is seeing a huge population increase after active conservation efforts in Shropshire, England. The effort involved replanting wildflower meadows in the area β and the bees came buzzing backπͺ». π₯² Who's chopping onions... π What's Your Win? | | π It's your time to shine | Welcome to my favorite part of the newsletter, What's Your Win, where we celebrate the good news happening right here in our Positive DONUT community. Big or small, there are things every day to celebrate and be grateful for π. Check out the submissions we received this week! β€οΈ Wendy from Manitoba, Canada, is grateful for her honorary daughter... - "I have had a very rough year, including separating from my husband after ten years under not great circumstances," she said. "His kids are 11 and 14, so I have been a part of their lives for most of them. They will always be children of my heart. Today the 11 year old sent me the most beautiful message thanking me for all that I have done for her and making sure I know that I will always be her family no matter what happens going forward. It was so lovely that it brought tears to my eyes."
π Julia T. from Connecticut is excited for her new career path... - "I just started my first 'real person job' after graduating college, and I'm loving it! My team is so wonderful, and I had my first business trip to Pittsburg last week to meet everyone in person. I'm really excited to keep growing within the company and see where my career takes me."

π Submit a Win | | Can I level with you for a minute? |
| To preface, this isn't easy for me. I mean it when I say the "What's Your Win" section is my favorite part of the newsletter. But lately, we've been struggling to get submissions. And before we change the section entirely, I want to ask you all how we can make this better. π The driving idea behind What's Your Win: I want the Positive DONUT Community to be supportive, optimistic, and a place where we all feel encouraged to share the good β big OR small β happening in our lives. I can't stress the small part enough, because through sharing, the general idea was that it'd possibly help us find a little more joy in the monotony of everyday life. So, let me know! Is there something we could do on our end improve What's Your Win? How would you feel most excited to share the good in your own life? - Just reply to this email with your thoughts. I always love your feedback and want Positive DONUT to grow along with usπ€.
π Pretty please?... And of course, if you have something exciting happening for you, submit your everyday wins here. |
