๐๐ฆThe Sweet Spotlight | | Skating through motherhood | Images via NY Times | Picture this: It's early morning, and you're getting your kiddos ready to get out the door and to school on time. You pack lunches, help them get dressed, drop them off at school, and then hit the skate park ๐น. This is the reality of the Brooklyn Skate Moms, a group of NYC mothers who have turned to skateboarding for one reason and one reason only: to have fun. - It all started in 2020, when a group of neighbors got together as lockdowns came to an end, desperate for connection and community.
- One of them was a former surfer; the other loved to snowboard and was looking for something to do in the off-season. Another was a single mom looking for a way to exercise and find a release. The women all coincidentally found each other at the skatepark and started to plan their skate sessions at the same time.
Thus, the Brooklyn Skate Moms was born. The moms all skate for different reasons; one of them says skating has helped her be easier on herself as she juggles single parenthood while running a business. - โYou know what,โ Ms. Noelliste, the mom in question, said. โIf it took me 200 tries to get that axle stall, then I shouldnโt be frustrated that after 10 tries of doing this with my kids or my business, I donโt have it yet.โ
|
|
| Most of the women have used skating as a way to bond with their children as well, sharing the hobby with them on the weekends and learning new tricks together. โI think weโre kind of proud of ourselves for doing it,โ said one of the skaters, Ms. South. โYou know, itโs so easy as a mom to just kind of let go of your passions and everything becomes about your child,โ she said. - The moms have all agreed to stay commited to the club and the fun of it all, even if their kids move onto other things.
๐น Bottom line: โWe have so many responsibilities, and sometimes you can feel really bogged down by them,โ Ms. Koh, an artist, told the NY Times. โBut what I love about skating is that it doesnโt serve any purpose in our lives except for fun. It is pure, unadulterated joy. You feel like a kid again.โ |

๐ธ Pic of the Week | | ๐ฃ It's so fluffy!!! | Image: Wild Planet Trust | Chilean flamingoes Curtis and Arthur, who both live at the Paignton Zoo in Devon, United Kingdom, just welcomed a new chick into the family. ๐ฅ It's unclear how the doting dads obtained an egg of their own, but the zoo believes it was abandoned by another flamingo in the enclosure. Now, the same-sex duo is rearing it as their own. - Curtis and Arthurโs chick, which does not yet have a name, is almost a month old โ and by all accounts, living its best little chickie life.

๐ฉ DONUT Holes | | โ๏ธ There's nothing worse than forgetting to take your liquids out of your carry-on... At the Ronald Reagan Washington Airport (Arlington, Virginia), however, these forgotten liquids are being put to good use. Rather than tossing too-big toothpaste tubes, hairspray cans, and other common toiletries when they get confiscated at TSA, the airport donates them to community organizations, shelters, or nonprofits. More than 2,300 items have been donated since the program started in April. ๐คธ From pommel horse to the dance floor... Olympic gymnast Stephen Nedoroscik โ aka "Pommel Horse Guyโ โ was just announced as the first contestant on the upcoming season of Dancing with the Stars. He is the first male gymnast to ever compete on the show. ๐คฃ Waiting for the punchline... The Edinburgh Fringe Festival just crowned this year's "funniest gag," awarding the prize to comedian Mark Simmons. His joke? โI was going to sail around the globe in the worldโs smallest ship but I bottled it.โ See all the finalists (and get ready to giggle) here. |

๐ What's Your Win? | | ๐ฅ Drumroll please... | Welcome to my favorite section of the newsletter, What's Your Win, where we get to celebrate all of the good news happening right here in our Positive DONUT community. Big or small, there's always something to be grateful for. Check out the submissions we received this week! ๐ธ Megan M. from Austin, Texas, saw her favorite band in the most iconic spot... - "At a concert for my favorite band we got evacuated because of a lightning storm. I had a spot on the rail and I was so bummed when they made us leave thinking there was no way Iโd get my spot back. Outside the venue, lots of people stuck around. When they went to let us back in, security was shuffling people back into line and a very nice man with an injury and a boot on his foot let me cut him in line so I would be FIRST back into the venue. Iโm so grateful for that guy, and that the lightning cleared, and that I got to see my favorite band play from the front row."
โค๏ธ One anonymous subscriber is grateful for their husband and unexpected funds... - "My husband had a stroke a couple months ago. He is unable to work and the insurance company that handles short term disability is dragging their feet. But yesterday we got some unexpected money which means we are able to pay all of our bills this month, and have the money for our mortgage payment next month. The relief is unreal."
๐ Wesley W. from New York City is thankful for life's little moments... - "The US Open Fanweek just started and on opening day my wife Mimi and I hesitantly went with nerves about the rain. We are solid tennis lovers and would have went no matter but we were followed by rainbows from entrance to exit. Such a beautiful day."๐
