Younger men and women aren’t seeing eye to eye

It appears Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus is due for a modern-day sequel, according to recent data.

Over the past decade, an ideological gap has opened up between young men and women in America, with the divide spreading across many key areas of life.

  • Political beliefs: According to Gallup data, young women have increasingly identified as more liberal and less conservative over the past decade, while young men’s political beliefs have remained relatively stable (with a slight trend in the opposite direction). Overall, US women aged 18-29 are currently 15 percentage points more likely to identify as liberal than men in the same age group (40% vs. 25%), up from a four percentage-point gap in 2014.
  • Religious views: Young men in America are now more religious than young women for the first time in modern US history, per recent polling from the American Enterprise Institute. In 2023, 39% of Gen Z women above the age of 18 described themselves as religiously unaffiliated, compared to 34% for their male counterparts.
  • Education: There are ~2.4 million more women than men across all US college campuses, up from a gap of 1.2 million one decade ago, per data from the American Institute for Boys and Men. In 2021, the most recent year with available data, men received 42% of all US bachelor’s degrees, the lowest male share on record.

Driving the trend: Experts say the growing gender gap among young adults in the US can be attributed to several factors that emerged in recent years, including the #MeToo movement, the Covid pandemic, the reversal of Roe v. Wade, and the rise of social media content and algorithms encouraging polarization.

Zoom out: Similar ideological divides between young men and women have recently emerged in dozens of countries across the globe, including the UK, China, Germany, South Korea, Poland, and Tunisia, the Financial Times reports.

📊 Flash poll (long-form): In your opinion, what’s behind the growing ideological gap between younger American men and women?

💥 Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli airstrike. On Friday, Hezbollah confirmed the death of Nasrallah, who was arguably the most powerful figure in Lebanon and Iran's closest ally in the region. Israel’s military said Nasrallah was killed in a large-scale airstrike on an underground bunker in Beirut, which leveled multiple large apartment buildings. Nasrallah is one of seven senior Hezbollah leaders and 1,000+ others who have been killed by Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon over the past two weeks, while zero Israelis have died from Hezbollah attacks over the same period.

🇷🇺 Russia’s government proposed a ban on encouraging child-free lifestyles. Last week, a top Russian lawmaker unveiled a proposal to ban citizens and companies from promoting the “childfree movement” on the internet, as well as in media, movies, or advertisements. The legislation, which carries fines of up to $4,300 for individuals, comes as Russia is facing a demographic crisis amid its lowest birth rate since 1999.

🇮🇪🇺🇸 The US charged three Iranians with hacking into former President Trump’s 2024 campaign. DOJ officials accused the three hackers of working for Iran to hack the Trump campaign in May and “weaponize” stolen material by spreading it to media organizations and the Biden campaign. Among the documents Iran is thought to have obtained is a dossier of research into VP nominee JD Vance. The dossier and other documents weren’t widely distributed until last Thursday, when journalist Ken Klippenstein posted the Vance dossier on his blog (which was later blocked on X, Threads, and Instagram).

The clock is ticking on a major port strike

Image: Spencer Platt/Getty

~45,000 dock workers on the East and Gulf Coasts are preparing to walk off the job at midnight, should an agreement not be reached between their union and shipping companies prior. A labor stoppage would affect 36 ports that collectively handle ~60% of US shipping traffic.

Oceans apart: The US Maritime Alliance, which represents shippers and ports, and the dock worker’s union haven’t met since June. And while the two sides have reportedly been in communication, as of Sunday evening, no official talks are scheduled.

  • The sticking points are wages and plans to automate certain container operations.

Decisions, decisions

The US government could intervene to speed up negotiations and avert/end a strike, leaving the Biden admin in an interesting position.

Per the AP: Both President Biden and VP Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, have courted union support and don’t want to be seen as pressuring dock workers to reach a settlement. But if an extended strike were to cause shortages of consumer goods or fuel high inflation, it could cost Harris votes in the November election.

📸 Big picture: A strike would cost the US economy ~$5 billion/day (~6% of the national economy), according to JPMorgan analysts. Shipments could be diverted, but neither West Coast ports or the US rail system could handle the extra volume, according to experts.

💬 Overheard

"A city that doesn’t care about the odds has a baseball team to match.”

Over the past month and a half, the MLB’s Detroit Tigers have been hotter than Chris Hemsworth doing deep knee bends. The team has won 31 of its last 44 games, and put an exclamation point on this magical run by clinching a playoff berth on Friday.

A team of density destiny? When the streak began, the Tigers had a 0.2% chance to make the playoffs (1 in 500), according to FanGraphs. They sat more than a dozen games back in their division, and about the same from a wild-card spot.

But then the Motor City Kitties caught fire, thanks to a combination of timely hitting, a stellar pitching staff (including presumptive Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal), the subtraction of strikeout-happy SS Javier Báez, and the steady hand of manager AJ Hinch.

👀 Looking ahead… The MLB playoffs kick off tomorrow with the Wild Card matchups, which will be finalized later today.
