πŸ‘πŸ”¦ The Sweet Spotlight

πŸ‘―β€β™€οΈ It's a twin thing

Images: Linda Thomas via CNN

Many people can match outfits and be #twinning – but they say actual twins have a bond only they can understand.

Identical twins Karen Rodman and Linda Thomas are a testament to this twin magic. The sisters have been inseparable since birth, and now live less than five miles from each other in Las Vegas. They work together, carpool together, and share their day-to-day together – and even have identical phone numbers, save for the last digit.

  • β€œWe’ve always had a very close relationship,” Karen told CNN. β€œPeople always said we were like one coat of paint.”

When Linda got sick in 2021, Karen was there with her through every step of the way. Diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare blood cancer that affects plasma cells and can cause kidney failure, Linda went through multiple rounds of chemotherapy on top of neck surgery and a bone marrow transplant.

Three years down the line, everything was looking okay – until it wasn’t.

Linda’s kidneys were failing. She needed a donor, and fast.

As soon as Karen heard of her twin’s need for a kidney, she stepped forward. β€œI knew I couldn’t go on with my life with my sister not being able to have a better quality of life,” she said.

β€œThere wasn’t a conversation,” Linda recalled to CNN. β€œShe raised her hand right away and she said, β€˜she got one right here.’ That was the only conversation.”

  • As the twins prepared for the transplant surgery, the doctors discovered they were a 99% match – an incredibly rare occurrence, though common with identical twins.
  • This 99% DNA match meant Linda did not have to take immunosuppressants, which reduce the body’s immune system and are typically used in organ transplants to prevent the recipient’s body from attacking the transplanted organ. Most people who receive a kidney transplant take the drugs for the rest of their life.

The sisters underwent successful transplant surgery in October of this year. Linda’s new kidney began working immediately after.

πŸ’¬ What they're saying: I’m just so grateful to have been able to go through this with my sister,” Karen said. β€œIf it had been the other way around, it would have absolutely been the same.”

β€œWe are so looking forward to 2025,” Linda told Cedars Sinai. β€œWe got a lot of things to do and life to live.”

πŸ“Έ Pic of the Week

😁 He's still smilin'

For eight decades, actor Dick Van Dyke has brought song, dance, and smiles to the screen and stage. And at nearly 100, he’s still dancing.

  • The 98-year-old Hollywood legend is the star of Coldplay’s new music video for its single, "All My Love."
  • Watch it here

πŸ•Ί Chim-chim-cher-ee: Van Dyke told Variety he considers himself β€œone of those lucky people who got to do for a living what I would have done anyway. Think how lucky I am. I got to do what I do – play and act silly.”

❀️ Fighting the holiday blues… A shop owner in Glasgow is not closing his doors on Christmas, and for good reason. Twenty-five year-old Jordan Trainer has promised to keep his store open from 11 am-2 pm on Christmas Day for anyone who may be lonely and is craving community.

🌎 Taking care of our planet… California resident Andy Wong has picked up so much litter around the San Francisco Bay Area that his efforts can be seen by satellite. Check it out here.

🐢 Homeward bound… A pug named Bruno is back with his family in California after turning up more than 400 miles from home at a shelter in Oregon. We may never get a Homeward Bound: Bruno to know what happened on his three-week journey to Oregon, but the pup is safe at home at last.

πŸ“š Gabriella H. is proving that hard work pays off…

  • "I am a senior in high school, and I am doing the International Baccalaureate program. If you anything about it, there are a lot of papers that must be written your senior year. I am happy to say that I have rough drafts of all five papers! I am especially proud of my 4,000-word Extended Essay in Mathematics, where I got to explore a field of math I want to pursue when I graduate."

πŸ¦ƒ One anonymous reader is thankful for new traditions...

  • "I hosted Thanksgiving for the first time! I’m low/no-contact with most of my family, and I moved into my own place this year, so I invited the rest of the people in my life for a dinner. We had such a great time, great food, and we played a few fun games."

🐾 Kelly R. from Buffalo, New York, is soaking up the puppy love...

  • "I am retiring from 30 years of teaching high school and was worried about who I would care for. Although it's only December, I am officially a Friend of City of Buffalo Animal Shelter. I am walking and loving on strays and surrendered puppers!! I also get to introduce them to people looking to adopt. I am in heaven everyday I get to hug these angel babies."πŸ‘‡
