ππ¦ The Sweet Spotlight | | π―ββοΈ It's a twin thing | Images: Linda Thomas via CNN | Many people can match outfits and be #twinning β but they say actual twins have a bond only they can understand. Identical twins Karen Rodman and Linda Thomas are a testament to this twin magic. The sisters have been inseparable since birth, and now live less than five miles from each other in Las Vegas. They work together, carpool together, and share their day-to-day together β and even have identical phone numbers, save for the last digit. - βWeβve always had a very close relationship,β Karen told CNN. βPeople always said we were like one coat of paint.β
When Linda got sick in 2021, Karen was there with her through every step of the way. Diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare blood cancer that affects plasma cells and can cause kidney failure, Linda went through multiple rounds of chemotherapy on top of neck surgery and a bone marrow transplant. Three years down the line, everything was looking okay β until it wasnβt. Lindaβs kidneys were failing. She needed a donor, and fast. |
|
| As soon as Karen heard of her twinβs need for a kidney, she stepped forward. βI knew I couldnβt go on with my life with my sister not being able to have a better quality of life,β she said. βThere wasnβt a conversation,β Linda recalled to CNN. βShe raised her hand right away and she said, βshe got one right here.β That was the only conversation.β - As the twins prepared for the transplant surgery, the doctors discovered they were a 99% match β an incredibly rare occurrence, though common with identical twins.
- This 99% DNA match meant Linda did not have to take immunosuppressants, which reduce the bodyβs immune system and are typically used in organ transplants to prevent the recipientβs body from attacking the transplanted organ. Most people who receive a kidney transplant take the drugs for the rest of their life.
The sisters underwent successful transplant surgery in October of this year. Lindaβs new kidney began working immediately after. π¬ What they're saying: Iβm just so grateful to have been able to go through this with my sister,β Karen said. βIf it had been the other way around, it would have absolutely been the same.β βWe are so looking forward to 2025,β Linda told Cedars Sinai. βWe got a lot of things to do and life to live.β |

If you anything about it, there are a lot of papers that must be written your senior year. I am happy to say that I have rough drafts of all five papers! I am especially proud of my 4,000-word Extended Essay in Mathematics, where I got to explore a field of math I want to pursue when I graduate."
π¦ One anonymous reader is thankful for new traditions... - "I hosted Thanksgiving for the first time! Iβm low/no-contact with most of my family, and I moved into my own place this year, so I invited the rest of the people in my life for a dinner. We had such a great time, great food, and we played a few fun games."
πΎ Kelly R. from Buffalo, New York, is soaking up the puppy love... - "I am retiring from 30 years of teaching high school and was worried about who I would care for. Although it's only December, I am officially a Friend of City of Buffalo Animal Shelter. I am walking and loving on strays and surrendered puppers!! I also get to introduce them to people looking to adopt. I am in heaven everyday I get to hug these angel babies."π
