Women in the Rink

As the winter continues to bring freezing cold to Duluth, Minnesota, the sounds of skates against the ice can be heard regularly at Glen Avon Park.

The hockey skates don’t belong to the suspected teenage boys, though – they're on their moms' feet instead.

⛸️ Meet the Motherpuckers, a beginner women’s hockey group with members ranging anywhere from 30 to 60 years old. The hockey newbies hit the rink throughout the winter to learn and practice the sport in a supportive and low-pressure environment.

The women love every second: β€œI don’t even pay attention to the cold. It’s just like being a kid again because you’re just playing,” said Motherpucker member Julie Flotten, 54, during a break from a scrimmage. The oncology nurse had never played hockey before joining the league. Now, she looks forward to their practices all week.

The backstory: Member Liesa Lyn founded the Duluth club after learning to skate in another Motherpuckers league near Chicago. After talking to some moms in the area and pitching the idea, their first team was formed.

πŸ’ Bottom line: The women are appreciative of the community and freedom that Motherpuckers has brought them later in life.

  • "Nobody says that you shouldn’t be here, or that you’re not good enough,” shared team member Kimberly Rines, 53. β€œAnd you know, at my age, that doesn’t happen very often, where you can start something from scratch, never having done it before, and still feel like you belong.”

πŸ₯‚ Cheers to the happy couple

Image: Facebook/The Odessa Zoo

The Odessa Zoo in Ukraine recently announced the victors of its annual Couple of the Year Contest – just in time for Valentine’s Day. The winners? Masazhik the cat and Bagel the lamb, an unusually bonded pair that beat out several same-species duos for the coveted title.

Masazhik, whose name translates to "massage therapist," is regularly seen at the zoo happily perched on Bagel’s backπŸ‘†.

🍩 DONUT Holes

πŸ“š Fifty-eight year old Ted Midgely had never learned to read due to his dyslexia. But last year, after decades of illiteracy, the UK man signed up for reading lessons. He recently read a copy of a Speedway Star magazine that he kept for 40 years.

πŸŽ‰ When Doug Turner walked over to his neighbor’s house to invite her to his annual β€œWinter Party,” he had no idea it would quickly make him a worldwide sensation. The 87-year-old, who handwrote all of the invites for his block party, has racked up 1+ million likes on TikTok – and everyone seems to want an invite.

😍 Meet Milo and Tina, the official mascots for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. The stoats are part of the weasel family, and utterly adorable.

πŸ† What's Your Win?

πŸ₯³ It's here, it's finally here!

It's my favorite part of the newsletter, What’s Your Win 😍. Now I love writing about and sharing good news from around the globe, but there’s nothing like celebrating all of the positivity happening right here within our DONUT community.

Check out the wins this week!

πŸ™ Lauren P. from San Diego, California, is grateful for her health…

  • "I found out in October that I have the BRCA1 gene mutation, which puts me at high risk for breast, ovarian, and cervical cancer. I am two weeks post-recovery from my preventive hysterectomy and oophorectomy (removal of fallopian tubes and ovaries). I plan to have a double mastectomy later this year. I am recovering well and so grateful that I have been able to take preventive measures before getting cancer. PSA: get your wellness checks and mammograms, and consider genetic testing if you have any family history of cancer!"

πŸ’ͺ One anonymous subscriber is feeling proud of themselves (and rightly so)…

  • "I unfortunately have been put in the position multiple times recently of having to stand up for myself. While this sucks, I am proud of myself for rising to the challenge and becoming stronger in my convictions rather than letting myself be trodden over."

πŸ‡²πŸ‡½ Gabriela H. from San Luis PotosΓ, Mexico, is perfectly at home…

  • "I recently moved back to my home state (S.L.P) after living in Dallas, TX for thirteen years. During this time not only have I been able to meet so many wonderful people, but I started an online English course and got offered an amazing position at a private school! If my luck has been this great in the two months since I moved, I cannot wait to see what the rest of the year brings :)"

πŸŽ‰ Claire N. from Michigan has all the reason to celebrate…

  • "After 11 years, last week I submitted my LAST student loan payment!!!"
