🗣🌐 Dose of Discussion: A 360° Look at a Hot-Button Issue | | The Trump admin faces a judicial showdown over Venezuelan deportations | Image: Bloomberg | The Executive and Judicial Branches are currently locked in a power struggle related to last weekend’s deportations of alleged Venezuelan gang members by the Trump administration, which occurred despite a court order halting the move. Catch up quick: On Saturday, President Trump invoked a little-used wartime law called the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to quickly deport hundreds of Venezuelan migrants who are alleged gang members. Trump’s move was temporarily blocked hours later by District Judge James Boasberg, who ordered a two-week halt so he could consider arguments that the law was improperly invoked. Boasberg also orally instructed the DOJ’s lawyers to return any planes carrying alleged Venezuelan gang members for deportation that had already taken off. - Two such planes, which were en route to El Salvador as the judge issued his order, didn’t turn around.
- A third plane carrying alleged gang members to El Salvador took off from Texas minutes after the judge’s order, and also didn’t turn around.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the Trump admin “did not ‘refuse to comply’ with a court order” – which she described as having “no lawful basis” – since the judge’s decision was issued after the planes had left US territory. The conflict escalates furtherIn a social media post yesterday, Trump said “this judge [Boasberg], like many of the Crooked Judges’ I am forced to appear before, should be IMPEACHED!!!” It marks the first time since taking office that Trump has asked Congress to seek a judge’s removal, Politico reports. Trump’s comments prompted responses from the Legislative and Executive Branches: - Six Republican House lawmakers sponsored a measure introducing articles of impeachment against Judge Boasberg, claiming he overstepped his authority.
- Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts issued a rare public statement saying the impeachment of federal judges is "not an appropriate response" to disagreeing with their rulings.
Looking ahead…The legal battle over the Trump admin’s recent deportations of alleged Venezuelan gang members is expected to reach the Supreme Court. 📊 Flash poll: In your opinion, which phrase best describes the current dispute between the Executive and Judicial Branches? |

⏱💥 Speed Rounds: Quick, Impactful Stories | | MLB begins its season in Japan | Image: Eugene Hoshiko/AP via CNN | The LA Dodgers topped the Chicago Cubs 4-1 yesterday in the first matchup of a two-game series in Tokyo, Japan, kicking off the MLB regular season and also tossing a nod to a tradition that’s tied the US and island nation in the Pacific together for 150+ years. Not just America’s national pastimeBaseball has been in Japan for nearly as long as it's been in the states thanks to American teacher Horace Wilson, who moved to Tokyo in 1872 and taught the game to his students. Decades of cross-nation collaboration and friendly competition followed. - Japanese teams traveled to play in the US dating back to the early 1900s, while 100+ US college and pro teams have embarked on baseball tours of Japan.
- Possibly the most famous of these tours occurred in 1934, when
The Sultan of Swat The King of Crash The Colossus of Clout The Colossus of Clout Babe Ruth and other future Hall of Famers played a 19-game barnstorming tour against a Japanese all-star team.
Speaking of Japanese star power…The Dodgers-Cubs series features five Japanese players, including the newly signed Rōki Sasaki, who takes the mound for LA in his MLB debut today, and the kind-of-good-at-baseball Shohei Ohtani. As for Opening Day stateside: It’s not quite time to be scarfing down a hot dog in an MLB stadium while simultaneously chirping the opposing team’s left fielder and talking about how “this is the year, guys, I swear” – but it will be soon. March 27, to be exact. |

New research quantifies the gender gap in teen experiences | Image: George Washington University | It’s no secret that boys and girls face different challenges as they grow and mature into adults. A new Pew Research survey of ~1,400 US teens aged 13-17 attempts to quantify those differences. Key findings: Girls report more pressure to look good (55% vs. 39% for boys) and to fit in socially (45% vs. 37%), while boys report more pressure to be physically strong (43% vs. 23%) and to be good at sports (36% vs. 27%). US teens are also: - ~8x more likely to say girls more commonly experience anxiety and depression compared to boys (39% vs. 5%).
- ~14x more likely to say girls at their school get better grades compared to boys than the opposite (42% vs. 3%).
- ~16x more likely to say boys are more disruptive in class compared to girls (63% vs. 4%).
Bottom line: Despite their different experiences, teen boys and girls ultimately want many of the same things out of life, according to Pew. Majorities from both genders say it’s important to have a job or career they enjoy (86%), have close friends (69%), and have a lot of money as an adult (58%). |

🤑☁️ Stat of the Day: An Acquisition Number in the Clouds | | Second time’s the charm? Following a failed purchase attempt last summer, Google yesterday announced it is acquiring cybersecurity startup Wiz for $32 billion. It marks the tech giant’s largest-ever acquisition, and the biggest number paid for a private, venture-backed company in history. Gee, Wiz: The startup, which offers cybersecurity software for cloud computing, including prevention, active detection, and response, is considered one of the fastest-growing of all time. It hit $100 million in annual recurring revenue 18 months after being launched by four friends in 2020, and sold shares at a $16 billion valuation last summer. Looking ahead…Google is hoping Wiz’s enhanced security features will help it win more cloud customers in a competitive and fast-growing industry where it has fallen behind Amazon and Microsoft. But first it’ll need to get the deal past regulators, in what analysts are calling the first major test of the Trump admin’s M&A approach. |
