πŸ‘πŸ”¦ The Sweet Spotlight

❀️🏠 The Lost Home Project

Images: Maya Brattkusv

On January 8, La CaΓ±ada Flintridge resident Maya Brattkusv evacuated her California home, not knowing if she would return.

As the Eaton fire engulfed her region, she was one of the lucky ones whose homes were spared by the flames. Many of her friends and family were not so lucky.

β€œFor the first week or two, all I could do was just kind of doomscroll and watch the news and try [to] feed myself and just get through it,” Maya told the Outlook Valley Sun regarding the destruction. She donated to people’s GoFundMe pages and rebuilding efforts, but it didn’t feel like enough.

That’s when she turned to a hobby in which she’s always found solaceβ€”drawing.

✍️ Maya started by drawing her best friend’s home, which was lost in the fire. At first, she saw the hobby as a form of self-care and a way to keep herself distracted from doomscrolling all day. Drawing her friend’s home helped not only her own mental health, but gave her bestie a memento to remember her former residence.

Maya shared that first drawing on Reddit and offered to draw anyone’s home lost in the fire for free. She was absolutley overwhelmed with the response.

100+ requests from grieving Californians came pouring in. And for the past three months, Maya has spent her days keeping the memories of lost homes and buildings alive. She lovingly calls her effort The Lost Home Project.

She’s even putting a book together of her pieces with stories of some of the properties.

  • Her vision: β€œCommunities [can] flip through and see their neighborhoods again and see the houses that they walked by every day, and their neighbors, and read the stories from their community.”

Big picture: Throughout the whole process, Maya has been most blown away by the strength and power of community. She told the Outlook Valley Sun: "At a time when everything seems so negative, chaotic and divided in our country, it gives me some hope that people are basically good and just want to help each other and be good neighbors.”

Believe it or not, these dogs are NOT going snorkeling

They're preparing for a volcanic eruption😳.

πŸŒ‹ A volcano outside of Anchorage, Alaska, is showing signs of an impending eruption over the next few monthsβ€”and dog owners are taking puparations very seriously, stocking up on goggles, booties, and even canine respirators. Many dog owners are also training their pooches to get used to the equipment before the eventual eruption.

🦍 Fatou, the world’s oldest living gorilla in captivity, is celebrating her 68th birthday. The gorilla was born in 1957 and came to the Berlin Zoo in 1959. Zookeepers made her a fruit and vegetable cake to celebrate the occasion.

πŸ“š A school district in Spokane, WA, has introduced its β€œEngage IRL” plan. This plan enforces cell phone bans school-wide, while also ensuring that every student is enrolled in at least one enriching extracurricular activity.

πŸ˜‡ Mindfulness Moments

It's all about mindset, baby

I loved this article about the benefits of setting purposeful daily intentions for a more driven life.

  • The act of choosing a specific intention or intentions to live your life by each day helps rewire your Reticular Activation System (RAS). Your RAS is basically the set of "rules" by which you see the worldβ€”and through mindfulness and intentionality, we can decide what we see as "true" each day.
  • For example: If you repeatedly chose to see your life in a positive and focused way, you'll start to see the positive things all around youπŸ₯°.

This can be a game-changer: Check out the article to dive deeper into how to write or choose your intentions, and why they're so benefical for us. But for now, here are some of my favorites from the list:

  1. I intend to do my best today to achieve my goals.
  2. I intend to do something fun solely for joy today.
  3. I intend to bring abundance and goodness into my life.
  4. I intend to be grateful for at least 3 things today.
  5. I intend to see my beauty and accept my flaws.

πŸ“ˆ Choose your favorite and declare it as your intention for the day. The more you repeat it, the more you'll believe it!

πŸ† What's Your Win?

😍 It's here!!!

Welcome to What’s Your Win, the section of the newsletter where we celebrate all of the good news happening right here in the Positive DONUT community. I love sharing stories from around the globe, but there’s just something extra special about hearing what’s going on in your lives.

Check out the submissions we received this week!

❀️ Sie H. from Virginia is grateful for their partner…

  • "My partner (of almost eight years now) bought me a new ring recently! I wanted one that was a bit more comfortable and plain and she picked out such a cute one with very little input from me which I thought was sweet."

Secondly, I have a win to share for myself!

πŸš™ Kailyn T. from Guilford, Connecticut, is ready to hit the roads…

  • "I bought my first car this week! I’ve been living in Manhattan for the last seven years so never had a need for a vehicle (shoutout to public transit), but since moving to the suburbs in January, it's become very clear that I would need oneβ€”and soon. I didn’t know if I would be able to afford it on my own, but I was able to find the perfect car for me and finance it in a way that feels very manageable. I’m so excited to hit the road in a car that’s all mine!"
