ππ¦ The Sweet Spotlight | | Women in the rink | Images: Derek Montgomery, MPR News | When the winter brings freezing cold to Duluth, Minnesota, the sounds of skates against the ice can be heard regularly at Glen Avon Park. The hockey skates donβt belong to the suspected teenage boys, thoughβthey're on their moms' feet instead. βΈοΈ Meet the Motherpuckers, a beginner womenβs hockey group with members ranging anywhere from 30 to 60 years old. The hockey newbies hit the rink throughout the winter to learn and practice the sport in a supportive and low-pressure environment. The women love every second: βI donβt even pay attention to the cold. Itβs just like being a kid again because youβre just playing,β said Motherpucker member Julie Flotten, 54, during a break from a scrimmage. The oncology nurse had never played hockey before joining the league. Now, she looks forward to their practices all week. |
|
| The backstory: Member Liesa Lyn founded the Duluth club after learning to skate in another Motherpuckers league near Chicago. After talking to some moms in the area and pitching the idea, their first team was formed. π Bottom line: The women are appreciative of the community and freedom that Motherpuckers has brought them later in life. - "Nobody says that you shouldnβt be here, or that youβre not good enough,β shared team member Kimberly Rines, 53. βAnd you know, at my age, that doesnβt happen very often, where you can start something from scratch, never having done it before, and still feel like you belong.β

πΈ Pic of the Week | | Lending a helping handβliterally | Image: Serendipity Books | When beloved Michigan bookstore Serendipity Books announced it was moving to a larger space, owner Michelle Tuplin had to figure out how to transfer 9,000+ books safely down the street to the new building. After putting out a call for volunteers, Michelle was astonished when 300+ people showed up to help with the big move. - Rather than loading up cars to bring books just around the corner, however, the volunteers decided to make a human chain stretching 350 feet from the old storeβs stockroom to the new location.
Whoa: The entire inventory of books made it to the new store in less than two hoursβand in alphabetical order, no less. +Note: This story previously appeared in an April 2025 edition. |

π© DONUT Holes | | βΈοΈ Teenage sweethearts Jerry and Tally met at the local ice rink ~60 years ago. And to this dayβtheyβre still skating together. π€ Tweny-two years ago, a nervous teenage Natalie Gilbert flubbed the lyrics to the National Anthem before an NBA game. But she got another shot at itβwith the same coach who helped her through the first rendition standing on the sidelines. π¦ The rare Mediterranean monk seal, once on the brink of extinction, is seeing its population rise due to conservation efforts. π What's Your Win? | | π It's here | Welcome to Whatβs Your Win, the section of the newsletter where we celebrate all of the good news happening right here in the Positive DONUT community. I love sharing stories from around the globe, but thereβs just something extra special about hearing whatβs going on in your lives. Check out the submissions we received this week! πΆββοΈπ Cherie H. from Minnesota rose to her birthday challenge... - "I walked 40 miles on my 40th birthday. It was 91,000 steps. It took 12 hours. It was a challenge I'm proud I accomplished."
π Sara C. from Austin, Texas, is experiencing a mix of joy, anxiety, hope, and resilience as she goes through pregnancy (we're all behind youπͺ)... - "A few years ago my husband and I got pregnant for our first time. At our first appointment we found out it was ectopic (stuck in the fallopian tube) and had an emergency surgery the next morning to remove my right fallopian tube. The following year we got pregnant again and at my 10-week appointment I received the devastating news that my baby had no heartbeat and I had miscarried. I had another emergency surgery the next morning, exactly 365 days after my previous surgery. A couple months ago we found out that we were pregnant again and I am almost to the 12-week mark. Every appointment is somewhat terrifying but so joyous when everything is confirmed as being good! We also just found out the sex of the baby last night and found out we are having a girl. Praying that the rest of my pregnancy continues to go smoothly!π"
