🗣🌐 Dose of Discussion: A 360° Look at a Hot-Button Issue | | The Trump admin is touting a new savings plan for American babies | Image: YouTube/E*TRADE | This week, President Trump hosted a White House event to highlight a new investment plan that would give newborn US citizens $1,000 in a tax-deferred account that tracks the overall stock market. - The proposed savings accounts—dubbed “Trump accounts”—are part of the massive Republican-backed tax and spending bill currently moving through Congress.
Million Thousand dollar baby
The plan would create index fund accounts with $1,000, funded by the government, for citizens born in the US between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028. To access these accounts—which would be administered by yet-to-be-determined financial institutions—at least one parent must provide a Social Security number with work authorizations. - The child’s guardians or other private entities would be able to contribute up to $5,000/year—though there’s no cap on contributions from tax-exempt entities, such as private foundations.
- Account holders would reportedly be eligible to withdraw half of its cash value between their 18th and 25th birthdays, with tax penalties if the funds aren’t put towards education, a home down payment, or to start a small business.
But…Not everyone is convinced it’s a good idea. Some financial advisors say the “Trump accounts” are similar to existing tax-preferred savings opportunities, like 529 accounts, and actually offer worse investment incentives in many cases. And while Americans would receive an extra $1,000, the arrangement appears to disproportionately benefit Wall Street via ongoing management fees, as well as wealthier Americans who maxed out the other opportunities and get another tax benefit, some critics argue. The (potential) impact: The average $1,000 account would grow to ~$8,000 after 20 years, ~$69,000 after forty years, and ~$574,000 after sixty years if invested in a broad-based US equity index without any contributions or withdrawals, per a March analysis from the nonpartisan Milken Institute. Looking ahead…The “Trump accounts,” along with the larger GOP-backed tax and spending bill, appear on track to receive congressional approval ahead of Trump’s desired July 4 deadline to sign them into law. 📊 Flash poll: In general, how do you feel about the White House and Congress’ plan to give newborn US citizens $1,000 in a tax-deferred index fund account? |

⏱💥 Speed Rounds: Quick, Impactful Stories | | Ram is bringing back the V-8 Hemi | Image: Stellantis | Get ready for another slate of commercials telling you “it's got a Hemi.” Stellantis is bringing back the engine design banned by Nascar for being too dominating. 2026 Ram 1500 pickup trucks will once again have a 5.7 liter Hemi V-8 engine option, the company announced yesterday, saying its resurrection was due to customer demand. The engine was discontinued last year amid tightening fuel economy regulations and a companywide push toward EVs. - Hemi engines have been a company staple since the 1950s. Moving forward, Ram expects the Hemi engine option to represent 25%-40% of its 1500 pickup trucks’ sales.
- These new vehicles won’t feature the word “HEMI” on the side, as in years past. Instead, the company has created a new badge that features a ram’s head coming out of a Hemi engine that it’s calling its “Symbol of Protest.”
What is a Hemi? An engine design characterized by a hemispherical combustion chamber. This shape, where the cylinder head looks like a dome, allows for better airflow and combustion efficiency, leading to increased power and torque compared to traditional engines. Zoom out: Ram’s Hemi resurrection comes as automakers are increasingly walking back EV plans. 71 new electric vehicle models are expected to be offered over the next four years, about half of what was forecast two years ago, according to Bank of America projections. |

Timbaland wants to create a new music genre | Image: Stage Zero | Timbaland, music artist and producer extraordinaire (Justin Timberlake’s "Cry Me a River", Jay-Z’s “Dirt off Your Shoulder", Missy Elliot’s "Get Ur Freak On", Beyoncé’s "Drunk in Love", etc.), last week launched Stage Zero, an entertainment company with the stated goal of blending AI with human creativity to create a new brand of music called “A-pop” (or “AI pop”). It already has its first artist. An AI creation called TaTa (👆), driven by Suno AI, an artificial intelligence music creation program. The Grammy-award winning producer plans to handle a majority of production for this AI venture, per Billboard. - Songs will be created via a workflow where conventionally made Timbaland demos are uploaded to the platform, extrapolated upon by Suno, and then human-written lyrics are inserted.
- Stage Zero hopes to launch many AI personas similar to TaTa, with aspirations to turn these characters into virtual influencers—TaTa will maintain a social media presence with music videos generated by AI tools—and even movie and TV stars.
“Say tata”: Backlash to the announcement was brutal and swift from fellow musicians, who say it is too late to apologize. Stage Zero’s launch comes as major labels have filed lawsuits against Suno and competitor Udio over their use of copyrighted material in AI training data. Elsewhere…Oral arguments began this week in Getty Images’ landmark UK case against Stability AI, one of many other copyright cases involving the material upon which startups have trained chatbots. |

The Roman Emperor Nero participated in the Olympic Games in AD 67. He allegedly bribed organizers to enter, and also to hold the Olympics in an off-year to coincide with his tour of Greece. Despite a notable fall during the chariot race, Nero was declared the victor for all six events in which he competed—including three that he introduced himself—though Nero’s name was removed from the list of winners following his death a year later. 📰 Worth a Read: How adult sports leagues took over your city 🖱️ Clickbait: Think twice before you click ‘unsubscribe’ |
