A new weight-loss pill is as effective as Ozempic, research shows

In recent years, patients looking to lose weight via medication have been forced to take more shots than a frat house on Tequila Tuesday. But those days may soon be over.

A new daily pill from Eli Lilly can induce patients to lose as much weight as a weekly injection of Ozempic, according to research presented last weekend at the annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association.

Weight-loss pill poppin’

A new late-stage study found the GLP-1 oral drug, called orforglipron, caused patients with Type 2 diabetes to lose an average of 16 pounds after nine months on the highest dose. Researchers note that those figures represent a low-end estimate for weight loss should the pill be offered to people with obesity.

It could be released soon. Eli Lilly said orforglipron could become available as a treatment for obesity as soon as next year, pending regulatory approval.

  • The company hasn’t said how much the drug will cost. However, pills are typically cheaper to mass-produce compared to injections (aka existing weight-loss drugs).

Why it’s a big deal: An estimated 1 in 8 US adults have already taken a GLP-1 medication like Wegovy or Zepbound. But researchers believe a far greater number of people would use weight-loss drugs that don’t require weekly injections—and would also be more likely to maintain that usage over the long-term, which is necessary for the weight loss to stick.

Zoom out: Orforglipron is one of a dozen experimental obesity and diabetes medications shared this weekend that researchers hope will be more powerful and accessible than existing options like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, etc. These include medications that could trigger more weight loss than the typical 15%-20% of body weight, help patients shed pounds without losing as much muscle, and provide a cheaper alternative to current GLP-1 drugs.

AI is upending the job search process

Image: Filip Zivkovic/Vecteezy

Another potential sequel on Hollywood’s roadmap: A kid-free Pursuit of Happyness remake documenting the job search of Will Smith and his gritty AI chatbot.

Hiring managers report the number of applications submitted for open positions is on the rise, as job-seekers use chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT to quickly craft keyword-filled resumes, or pay for artificial intelligence agents that autonomously seek out and apply to jobs on their behalf.

  • The number of applications submitted on LinkedIn has jumped 45+% over the past year, according to figures reported by the NY Times’ DealBook.
  • The platform is now clocking an average of 11,000 applications/minute, with many looking suspiciously similar, according to hiring managers.

On the other hand: Companies are increasingly leaning into AI to filter through this deluge of applicants. One approach? Implementing AI-powered chat or video interviews, a move that Chipotle CEO Scott Boatwright said at a conference this month has reduced the burrito-maker’s hiring time by 75%.

There are downsides to this robo-filled process…There could be bias in the bots. And experts say fake identities + artificial-intelligence personas are increasingly being used to game interviews and secure roles, resulting in AI-vs.-AI interactions similar to the avatar-to-avatar flirting future envisioned by Bumble. A growing number of Fortune 500 companies have unwittingly hired North Korean cyber operatives as remote workers—while a recent Gartner report predicts that by 2028, one in every four job applicants will be made up.

The world’s biggest camera unveiled its first images

Astronomers published the first-ever pictures from the new Vera C. Rubin Observatory yesterday, in a move heralded as astronomy’s biggest moment since NASA revealed the first images from its James Webb Space Telescope.

  • The Rubin telescope, which features a record-setting 3,200-megapixel digital camera, is located atop a mountain in central Chile and jointly operated by the US Energy Department and National Science Foundation (NSF).
  • The scope’s state-of-the-art mirror design, highly sensitive camera, rapid survey speed, and advanced computing infrastructure each represent breakthroughs in their respective fields, according to Space.com.

Point and shoot…and shoot, and shoot

The facility is designed to map the Milky Way galaxy, and investigate the nature of dark energy and dark matter—mysterious substances comprising ~95% of the universe—by taking ~1,000 pictures/night for the next decade.

  • Rubin is expected to cover the entire visible Southern Hemisphere sky once every three to four nights, with each composite image so detailed that displaying it would require 400 ultra-HD TV screens.
  • “[The] Rubin Observatory will capture more information about our universe than all optical telescopes throughout history combined,” per acting NSF director Brian Stone.

Case in point: In its first 10 hours of observation, Rubin already discovered 2,100+ previously unknown asteroids in our Solar System, and is expected to uncover millions more within two years. For reference, current telescopes spot a combined ~20,000 asteroids/year.
