Good evening. With AI apps available, pretending to text friends when you feel awkward in a social setting has never been easier. And it seems the overwhelming choice for this task is ChatGPT.

According to new App Figures data shared with TechCrunch, OpenAI’s iOS and Android app:

  • Has generated $2 billion in global revenue since launching in May 2023, or ~30x the combined lifetime spending of its rivals on mobile, including Claude, Copilot, and Grok.
  • Is raking in ~$193 million/month—about 53x higher than Grok, its nearest competitor, which is bringing in ~$3.6 million/month.
  • Has been installed ~690 million times globally, compared with Grok’s ~39.5 million.

While the figures don’t paint an overall picture of AI companies’ revenue—leaving out API revenue, for example—they illustrate the towering lead OpenAI has when it comes to consumer devices (and bring more context to X owner Elon Musk’s recent complaints about the App Store’s alleged favoritism of ChatGPT).
