📜 September 17: On This Day in History | | Non-empire state of mind | Image:Wikimedia Commons/Netflix | Each of the following events happened on September 17. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom! - A) The Constitution of the United States of America is signed by 39 delegates present at the conclusion of the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. However, the document isn’t yet binding until ratified by nine of the 13 states, which occurs nine months later following a “hard-won battle,” per the History Channel.
- B) Harriet Tubman escapes from slavery in Maryland. She makes her way to Philadelphia, and becomes a guiding force in the Underground Railroad.
- C) The American TV series M*A*S*H, based on the Robert Altman film, debuts on CBS. The show is hugely popular with both critics and the general public (the first MASHup), with its farewell episode 11 years later drawing ~105 million viewers (currently the 10th-most-watched US telecast of all time).
- D) Oprah Winfrey launches her now-famous book club. Oprah’s Book Club quickly becomes a hugely influential force in the publishing world, with the popular daytime-TV host’s endorsement capable of catapulting a previously little-known book onto best-seller lists.
