📜 September 18: On This Day in History | | Park it like it’s hott | Image:Wikimedia Commons/Canva | Each of the following events happened on September 18. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom! - A) The 20,000-car parking lot at Canada’s West Edmonton Mall secures the Guinness World Record for the largest parking lot—a record that still stands today.
- B) Legendary American rock guitarist and singer Jimi Hendrix—who fused American traditions of blues, jazz, rock, and soul with techniques of British avant-garde rock to redefine the electric guitar in his own image, according to Encyclopedia Britannica—dies of an overdose in London. His death at 27 years old, along with the deaths of several popular musicians of the same age around the same time period, including Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison, gives rise to the infamous 27 Club.
- C) George Washington lays the cornerstone to the United States Capitol building, the home of the legislative branch of American government. However, it would take nearly a century to complete, as architects came and went, the British set fire to it, and it was called into use during the Civil War.
- D) Future President Jimmy Carter files a report with the International UFO Bureau, claiming he had seen an Unidentified Flying Object four years earlier. During his subsequent presidential campaign, Carter promises that, if elected president, he would encourage the gov’t to release “every piece of information” it has about UFOs. However, he backs away from this pledge once elected, saying that the release of some information might have “defense implications” and pose a threat to national security.
Hint: The UFO couldn’t park at the mall |
