📜 September 22: On This Day in History

Déjà vu all over again

Each of the following events happened on September 22. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) MLB baseball player, manager, and coach Yogi Berra, who won a record 10 World Series while a star catcher with the New York Yankees, dies. Berra is also remembered for his unintentionally amusing non sequiturs—including: “when you come to a fork in the road, take it” ; “You can observe a lot by watching" ; "The future ain't what it used to be" ; "No one goes there nowadays, it's too crowded" ; "Always go to other people's funerals, otherwise they won't come to yours" ; and the headline above👆.
  • B) President Abraham Lincoln issues a preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. It sets a date for the freedom of 3+ million enslaved in the US, and recasts the Civil War as a fight against slavery.
  • C) The first episode of Friends airs on NBC. The show goes on to become one of the most popular sitcoms in the US—”a cultural juggernaut, shaping comedy and pop culture for decades,” Cord Cutters News reports.
  • D) National Geographic publishes its first issue, without photos—though it would later become famous for its richly illustrated articles on various geographic regions of the world. The magazine has so few subscribers starting off that editor Gilbert H. Grosvenor personally addresses each copy, and carries the whole pile of them to the post office.
