📜 September 23: On This Day in History

Well, well, well

Image:Aramco Life/Canva

Each of the following events happened on September 23. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) After receiving concessions to locate and extract oil in Saudi Arabia from the country’s gov’t, a party of American geologists working for Rockefeller’s Standard Oil lands at the Persian Gulf port of Jubail in Saudi Arabia, and begins its journey into the desert to locate the most profitable spot to begin drilling. The partnership between Saudi Arabia’s gov’t and Standard Oil becomes known as the Arabian American Oil Company (Aramco)—now Saudi Aramco, the fourth-largest company in the world by revenue (market cap: ~$1.6 trillion).
  • B) Manon Rheaume becomes the first woman to play in one of the four major men's North American pro sports leagues, when she takes the ice for the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning in a preseason game.
  • C) American explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark return to St. Louis, Missouri, to much fanfare, after completing the first recorded overland journey from the Mississippi River to the Pacific coast and back. The Lewis and Clark Expedition had set off more than two years before to explore the territory of the Louisiana Purchase.
  • D) German astronomer Johann Gottfried Galle becomes the first person to ever observe the planet Neptune (#8 from the Sun), the existence of which had been mathematically predicted by Urbain-Jean-Joseph Le Verrier and John Couch Adams. The blue gas giant, which has a diameter ~4x that of Earth and completes an orbit of the Sun once every 165 years, is named for the Roman god of the sea.

Hint: If you need to nep-tune your answers, go on a journey first and try rearranging the planet second.
