📜 September 24: On This Day in History

What’s that smell?

Image: Google/Canva

Each of the following events happened on September 24. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) Nirvana releases its breakthrough album Nevermind—the one with the baby on the cover—which “help[s] make grunge an international phenomenon and [gives] voice to Generation X,” according to Encyclopedia Britannica. Its lead single, "Smells Like Teen Spirit,” also goes on to be inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
  • B) Devils Tower, a massive rock formation in northeastern Wyoming, is named as America’s first national monument (on the day of rapture no less😱😈). President Theodore Roosevelt, who signs the proclamation, calls the “lofty and isolated rock” a “natural wonder.”
  • C) The Supreme Court of the United States is established, as the Judiciary Act of [redacted] is passed by Congress and signed by President George Washington. It creates a tribunal made up of six justices, who were to serve on the court until death or retirement.
  • D) 60 Minutes airs its first episode—which features coverage of the Richard Nixon and Hubert Humphrey presidential campaigns, commentary from various writers and journalists, an interview with the Attorney General, part of an Oscar-winning short film, and even a “high-minded discussion between the hosts on the nature of reality,” per The History Channel. The primetime news show goes on to become one of the most-successful programs in broadcast history, clocking in as the US’ top-rated news show for five-plus decades (and counting).
