📜 September 29: On This Day in History

Great Scot(land Yard)!

Image: History by the Yard

Each of the following events happened on September 29. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) England's first professional police force, London's Metropolitan Police (often called Scotland Yard), is founded. It becomes a model for future police departments in various other countries, including the US.
  • B) John G. Roberts, Jr. is sworn in as the 17th chief justice of the US Supreme Court, a position he still holds.
  • C) Rudolf Diesel, inventor of the engine that bears his name, disappears from a steamship while traveling from Antwerp, Belgium to Harwich, England, and is later found mysteriously dead. Diesel’s engine goes on to revolutionize the railroad industry; after WWII, trucks and buses also start using diesel-type engines, which enable them to carry heavy loads much more economically.
  • D) Star MLB outfielder Willie Mays of the then-New York Giants makes a seemingly impossible over-the-shoulder catch of a long fly ball to deep center in the World Series. It becomes forever known as “The Catch.” Watch it here, and see a breakdown of it here.

Hint: Same order, just put a diff one at the end
