📜 September 30: On This Day in History | | The nuclear family begins | Image: Google/Shutterstock/Canva | Each of the following events happened on September 30. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom! - A) The USS Nautilus, the world's first nuclear-powered vessel, is commissioned by the US Navy. The submarine—stretching 319 ft. and displacing 3,180 tons, much larger than the diesel-electric submarines that preceded it—could remain submerged for almost unlimited periods because its atomic engine needed no air and only a very small quantity of nuclear fuel. The US currently operates the most nuclear-powered vessels in the world; 71 subs and 11 aircraft carriers.
- B) Joseph Marion Hernández becomes the first Hispanic to be elected to the US Congress.
- C) The notorious Munich Agreement is signed. It averts the outbreak of war, but gives Czechoslovakia away to Adolf Hitler-led Germany—the result of Britain's Neville Chamberlain encouraging Britain and France to appease Hitler's demands in the hope of preventing WWII (it doesn’t).
- D) NBC airs the first MLB World Series game to ever be broadcast on TV—a “Subway Series” matchup between the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers. But not too many people watch it. Fewer than 50,000 TVs were used in the US, mostly in bars, restaurants, and private clubs in major cities on the East Coast.
Hint: The nuclear option should, by definition, always be last |
