📜 October 1: On This Day in History

Express yourself

Image: American Express/Canva (to remove the year)

Each of the following events happened on October 1. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) American Express launches its first credit card, a purple paperboard card designed to give travelers more flexibility. Approved AmEx users could purchase airline, steamship, and cruise tickets with one caveat: They had to pay back the balance in full every month. The company goes on to debut its first plastic charge card seven months later.
  • B) A 64-year-old gunman opens fire on a Las Vegas music festival from his hotel room, killing 60 people and wounding 850+ others before taking his own life. It surpasses the Pulse nightclub shooting as the deadliest mass shooting in modern US history.
  • C) The Walt Disney World Resort—a complex that features attractions based on the stories and characters created by the Disney Company—opens in Orlando. Disney World now hosts 50+ million guests/year, laying claim to the most-visited vacation resort in the world.
  • D) Yosemite National Park—home of natural wonders like Half Dome, El Capitan, and giant sequoia trees—is established by an act of Congress. It eventually becomes one of the most heavily visited national parks in the country, attracting ~4 million visitors/year.

Hint: There’s just one stop between the two attractions above (don’t worry, if you get it we won’t take credit).
