📜 October 2: On This Day in History

Group of peanuts pass the sniffy test

Each of the following events happened on October 2. Your challenge is to put them in the order in which they occurred by year, earliest to latest. Answers at the bottom!

  • A) Charles M. Schultz's Peanuts comic strip debuts in just seven US newspapers. (It would eventually run in more than 2,600.) Fun fact: The cartoonist almost named Charlie Brown's dog Sniffy—not Snoopy—but another comic dog already had that name.
  • B) American actor Rock Hudson, 59, dies. He’s one of the first Hollywood celebrities known to pass away from AIDS-related complications, and the extensive publicity surrounding his death draws attention to the disease.
  • C) American lawyer and civil rights activist Thurgood Marshall is sworn in as a US Supreme Court justice, becoming SCOTUS’ first Black member. He serves as an associate justice on the Court for 24 years.
  • D) Gatorade is first tested in a college football game—a matchup between Florida and LSU, played in “muggy, 102-degree heat.” UF players on the sideline down the drink, which is designed to fight dehydration, rebalance their bodies' electrolytes, and restore blood sugar, potassium, and body salts so they can continue to perform at a high level. Nicknamed "Gatorade” (Gator-Aid), the drink eventually becomes a mass-market phenomenon and makes its inventors v wealthy.
