- B) The first edition of the Guinness Book of Records is published. Its inspiration came to Hugh Jeffries, the managing director of Guinness Breweries, while trying to settle an argument on a hunting trip in Ireland—during which the trip’s members debated incessantly about the fastest game bird in Europe, yet were unable to locate a book with the answer.
- C) US President Abraham Lincoln, while expressing gratitude for a pivotal Union victory at Gettysburg, announces that the nation will celebrate an official Thanksgiving holiday on the last Thursday of every November.
- D) American collegiate football coach John Heisman, considered one of the greatest innovators of the game, dies. The Heisman, a trophy given annually to the best player in college football, still bears his name.
